Lagidorp review from Question Entertainment by Christopher Oullette
What Is It?
This is the second movie from Good Shepherds own Echo Productions. Like "The Jonah Wars", our first, "Lagidorp" is the result of a summer of work. Kids learned about the building blocks of a story until they found one that they wanted to tell. Then we had meetings to flush out exactly how the story would unfold. I wrote a script based on the story and characters we had developed. We then moved into preproduction where we had tryouts and cast the movie. We got together costumes and scouted locations. Then we started rehearsing and shooting. Post production (editing) got a bit hung up (computer problems, a busy schedule, a new baby! ) but now it is here.
In Lagidorp, the title character is a young man (Anna Laclair) whos father is a powerful wizard (Zack Wood). Despite the example of his older sister Nosdob (Cynthia Gerber) Lagidorp demands his share of his fathers power and leaves the protection of his fathers house to find "freedom and fun." His travels lead him to a sinister fair in the heart of Dragon Town.
How was it?
Well, its harder to answer this question when I actually made the movie. I can say that Im very happy with it.
The Jonah Wars was good, but we have learned a lot since then. The kids took there parts very seriously and the performances show that. There is a great original sound track mostly from Brian Nagel (who also helped make the movie and has an impossible to find cameo) and Blue on Blue (who did the soundtrack to the Jonah Wars). I guess I can tell you its fun and that this is, by far, the absolute best independent, 30 minute, fairy tale, fantasy, parable inspired movie made by a cast and crew almost entirely younger than high school, to come out this year!
Is it good for kids?
I think kids will get a real kick out of seeing their peers in a movie. The story is straightforward and has a good message. There are some parts that I think would be scary if the special effects were not so transparent. (Thats independent movie making for you.) Still if your child is particularly frightened by fantasy on a very basic level, you may want to be cautious of that.
What About Spiritual Issues?
Part of this movie came out of a lesson/discussion I was leading with the kids about Fairy Tale / Fantasy stories and how they match up with the Bible. Even the kids were aware that there is a controversy of the Magic oriented "Harry Potter" but an almost universal acceptance of the magical world through the wardrobe of "The Chronicles of Narnia". Our conversation was morphed into what would become in the movie "The Triune of Power."
Know Where The Power Comes From
Power can only be used in its kind, Corrupted power is Corrupt.
Real Power Grows in service and Depletes in Selfishness.
These concepts not only guide the characters in the movie, but when applied to other fantasy stories can help you to discern the message being communicated through the magical elements. Beyond just the intro to the genre, there are a lot of Jesus parables and other lessons stung together in a way that will hopefully help people look at the stories in a different light that may even bring out a deeper understanding.
What is your recommendation?
Everyone from Echo productions, my self included, would be thrilled if you would check out the DVD/CDpackage. The DVD has the movie and special features including: The Changed Music Video, Biblical Connections, A behind the scenes look, and some footage from the Grand Premier night. The CD includes the soundtracks to both Lagidorp and The Jonah Wars! I hope you will enjoy it.
Here is the list of Bible passages used (in order of importance to the movie):
