When I was 1 year old. My mom and dad were worried because I couldn't say any words. One night my Grandma Linda was babysitting me. Mom came to pick me up and Grandma told her... "Come in, but stay where Leah can't see you and call her name." And then mom knew. It took a long time for the doctors to give a diagnosis. I had a lot of tests. After 2 months my ENT doctor said, "Leah has a Severe to Profound hearing impairment." I got some hearing aids and and my family started learning sign language. My first signs were "mom" "bird" and "dog." When I don't have my hearing aids on I can't hear anything. My hearing aids help a lot. Once I figured out my first signs, I started learning so fast, my mom and dad could hardly keep up with me. We had a great support group in Salt Lake City. I had a Deaf Mentor named Diane. I had a Home Teacher named Gail. They taught me and my parents so much! Sometimes people at the grocery store see us signing and they feel sad and sorry for me. One lady said, "She's too cute to be deaf." I like being deaf and my mom and dad love me and we love American Sign Language. We are a very lucky family! |
