Skunks

Skunks don't climb! They dig and live under your back deck, or in your garden, under your shed and so on. They are not as common as Raccoons but can be bery offensive. Young skunks often practice spraying as they get used to their primary defensive weapon.

Skunks like Raccoons are nocturnal. There is a big difference between the two animals though. Skunks can spray up to 15 feet and can spray both accurately and several times. When they spray they usually give warning by turning around and raising their tails. If one does this RUN and RUN FAST IMMEDIATELY! If you’ve been sprayed by a skunk you know how powerful the aroma is. If you’ve not been sprayed take warning. What you smell in your car as you drive by a dead skunk, or where one has sprayed is but a minor odour compared to the gagging, weeping and dreadfully painful eyes a person experiences when actually sprayed by a skunk.

Once sprayed expect to live with the smell in decreasing amounts for 2-3 weeks. This even with the application of toothpaste, tomato juice and detergents.

A Quick Tip from Trapper Norm

If you want to see whether there really is a squirrel, raccoon, groundhog or skunk living under your porch in in your garden, why not be sure? Just sprinkle a bit of flour in front of the hole or entrance in the late afternoon and then check in the morning to see if there are tracks in it and through it into the opening - then you can be sure!

In short let the professionals deal with skunks - it just isn’t worth the risk to the home owner!
