| Hampton, GA - The Wednesday Night Racing Series (SCPRC) race at the 1.5-mile quad-oval Atlanta Motor Speedway, held on December 11th, 2002, was a huge success for GWI Racing. With a twist of pit strategy, John Hilsman (#770) was able to complete a 114-lap race on just one stop for tires and gas, while team-mates Kris Stump (#98) and Rick Brownhill (#61) made two stops each. John must have been running on fumes and bald tires, at the end, but he held on and crossed the finish line less than half a second ahead of Kris, who was charging hard and would have caught and passed John by the back straight. Rick was about eight seconds back, having opted to take only two tires on his second stop and not getting the grip he needed to keep up with Kris and John. The entire race was run under the green flag -- a great accomplishment, considering that most cars appeared to be set up on the loose side. Kim Meyer (#18) had some difficulties with what seemed to be a tight race car and finished the race four laps down, in ninth place. In a rare appearance, Byron Hopkins (#41), finished in tenth, dropping out after only 13 laps. |
