Growing pains have taken Lake Mary's Lanna Apisukh out of the McDonald's American Cup competition this weekend.

A stress fracture in the growth plate on right wrist will keep Apisukh, who recently won five medals at the Junior Pan American Championships in Brazil, in a limited role in training and out of competition until it heals.
Although the injury is common among young gymnasts, it comes at a bad time for Apisukh. It also could keep her out of this summer's United States Olympic Festival in San Antonio. In Los Angeles in 1989 as a 12-year-old, Apisukh became the youngest gymnast to win a gold medal in the Festival.

She could miss the Festival because that meet requires a qualifying performance at the American Classic in Salt Lake City in three weeks.

''The injury could keep her out of training three more weeks or three months,'' said Kevin Brown, Apisukh's coach at Brown's Gymnastics in Altamonte Springs.

''Remember, in every event you have to use your hands, and when you do, the wrist is irritated. Thus you have to give it rest.''

Said Apisukh: ''I'm disappointed because I'm the hometown girl. I guess I'll be sitting in the stands watching, but my heart will be out there competing. I know the best thing for me is to get stronger and prepare for my next competition.''

Apisukh (pronounced Ah-PIS-suk) will be replaced by Amanda Borden from Cincinnati.
