The big names coming to McDonald's American Cup gymnastics Friday and Saturday at Orlando Arena are world champions Shannon Miller and Vitaly Scherbo.
But don't be surprised if some rising stars from the 18 participating nations push them to the hilt - especially Rustam Sharipov and Lilia Podkopayeva of the Ukraine and Elena Piskun of Belarus, third at the American Cup a year ago. Joining Miller on the U.S. team will be Olympian Dominque Dawes, Amanda Borden, Larissa Fontaine, Tanya Maier and Jennie Thompson. The U.S. men's delegation features senior national team members Chainey Umphrey, Scott Keswick, John Roethlisberger and Drew Durbin. Altamonte Springs' Jenni Beathard has been named to the U.S. delegation participating in the International Mixed Pairs gymnastics competition in West Palm Beach later this month. . . . Sally Ward of Orange Park was named to the senior national Rhythmic Gymnastics team. Jacksonville's Tina Tharp and Fort Lauderdale's Nicole Zelek were named to the junior team. Olympic gymnast Ron Gallimore of Tallahassee has been named men's program director for U.S. Gymnastics, beginning March 9. Gallimore's mission will be to develop and advance the men's sport in the U.S. |
