Star Wars was a phenomenon in its time. In a world that desperately needed heroes, this movie affected millions of movie-goers in a positive way. For some, it meant a whole new outlook on life and imagination. Star Wars is a creation of Lucas Films. George Lucas used the most well known and simplest plot and storyline - essentally a fairy tale in space - to launch his ideas of Science Fiction. He tells the story of "a galaxy far, far away" who has been overrun with an evil government who is willing to wipe out entire planets to keep from giving its subjects freedom. This means that rebels are to be gathered and an old hero must, once again, emerge from his obsure hole to regain his legacy and save the people. Little do we know that a princess is to be rescued and a rogue with a Wookie would also play an intricate part in the telling of this story. To rescue a princess, one must have a prince in shining armor. Lucas chose to create a hero out of the unlikeliest of people, a young farmboy named Luke Skywalker. He goes in search of a man named Obi Wan Kenobi, a once powerful and well known Jedi Kight, and the adventure begins. Oh..yes...the princess! Leia is a young rebel sympathizer and a Princess of Alderon. She is stopped on her way home and captured by Darth Vader, the heavy in this tale. She sends a message out to Obi Wan in hopes of being rescued. He, in turn meets our young Luke and is enlisted in the fight for freedom. Trying to enlist aid on their way to the Princess, they encounter and hire a rogue called Han Solo, who turns out to be another unlikely hero. Star Wars: A New Hope is a great feel good movie. It contains the spills and thrills of a great Hollywood classics. Does everything end with a happy ending? For now......................... |

Empire Strikes Back is the reprisal of the first Star Wars movie. Turning into a saga, this movie takes us from where we left off in A New Hope and places us right back into the action. Graced with the same fine cast of characters that appeared in the other movie, this one becomes just a little darker. The Rebels had successfully rid themselves of the menacing Death Star and have almost turned the tides on the bad guys when they are discovered on a remote ice planet. Rushing to get off the planet before the Empire and Darth Vader can catch them, our heroes encounter many perils. Feeling the Force grow inside of him, Luke goes to the Degoba System to meet and be trained by non other than the last master Jedi....Yoda (a Frank Oz creation). Luck evolves into a Jedi, but before he can realize his true power, he is called away to his friends who are in grave danger. Han and Leia have sought cover in a floating city which is governed by an old acquaintence of Han. Little does he know that the city is really under the control of the Empire and that Vader is there to set a trap that will put them all in danger. It seems that Han owes a slug of a guy...and I do mean slug....named Jabba the Hut a big gambling debt. Vader makes it possible for the Hut to collect from Solo and tries to recapture the princess again, but the governor has second thoughts about teaming up with our resident bad guys and betrays Vader, taking Leia off with him in the Falcon (which was really his in the first place). Han is put on ice - bbbbbbrrrrrrrr! - and Luke comes to the rescue. But he is not in time. There is a great fight scene between Luke and Vader. Luke, powerful in the Force, almost bests Vader, the Dark Lord, until he is shocked with a confession. "Luke...I am your father!" The fight is a draw for now......but audiences know that there will be another part to this saga. |

Once again we join our heroes, in Return of the Jedi, where we left off in the movie before. Only this time, the plot thickens. The evil Emperor wants Luke on his side. He tells Vader that it must be...but the man in black is not convinced. Meanwhile, Han, Luke, and Leia are on Endor trying to disconnect the force field on the new and improved Death Star for the rebels so they can blow it to bits once more. They encounter some Imperial Guards in the process and are overtaken by the galaxy's shortest, cuddliest, and fiercest warriors, the Ewoks. These guys are the Teddy Bears from "you know where" when it comes to fighting!! Anyway, they capture our heroes and the only thing that saves them from becoming supper is C-3PO. He looks like a god they know. So, it's the droid's time to shine. He is a master linguist and a major whiner, so the audience is in for some comical fun in several scenes. Oh - did I mention the evil Emperor? He's coming to town, well at least to the new structurr almost finished formerly known as the Death Star. You've got to know that the bad guys plan on blowing something up with it, and it ain't gonna be pretty. Luke feels the "pull" of the Force and is driven to meet his father, Darth Vader, in a battle to the end. Vader doesn't exactly win the fight, but the Emperor cheats. He is torturing Luke, convincing him it would be much better to join him and Lord Vader.... On Endor, the Ewoks come to the rebel's rescue destroying the Imperial forces with their crude weapons. They swing from vines, chuck a lot of rocks, and some even loose their lives in the name of freedom, but they triumph over overwhelming odds. Luke is resisting the Emperor, who is loosing his patience by now. He thinks he has Luke where he wants him, and he may well have, but he fails to understand the power of genetic belonging. Vador feels something he hasn't felt in a long time: he feels love for his child. It's a good move for Luke and a bad move for the Emperor. He become space dust with his new Death Star, Vader is reunited with Jedi heroes long past and Luke finds out he's had a crush on his sister all along (Yuck!). Good thing for Han though...he doesn't have to kick Luke's - ...well you get the picture. The movie ends with the celebration in the Ewok village......but is this the last of Star Wars? |

In the fashion of the last three episodes of Star Wars, George Lucas tries to recapture the magic that he had once created. While the movie, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace was a great action film with some very creative ideas - my fav being Jar Jar Binks - this sequel lost something that the others possessed. Darth Maul, the new henchman had almost everything Darth Vader had, except lasting power. True, he did take on two Jedi Knights, but this guy, although he had great face paint, was not as evil and overpowering as Vader (nor as lasting either, I might add). Perhaps because this is Episode I, the beginning of the Star Wars saga. We meet little Anakin Skywalker, the future father of Luke the farmboy. We also meet the beautiful and strong-willed Queen Amidala. She can take care of herself as good as Leia although she doesn't have a Wookie to kick around. The Jedi Knights are awesome in this movie, except that all they get to do is to knock down these frail looking stick-like robots that break easily. The real threat in this movie is the man who pretends to be the good guy and is actually the most dangerous character in the movie. He will become the Emperor. There are actually some really good scenes in this movie and we all get a kick out of seeing what kind of kid Skywalker was. He was brainy and very good mechanically which will help him to become a great bad guy in the future.....but just how did that sweet kid turn into Darth Vader? If you want to find out....you've got to see Episode II. |
