Author's Note:  It's been months since I've been inspired to write J/C, but this challenge intrigued me. Thinking about it, though, I realized that what would make me happy in the finale, J/C-wise, is actually a very minor thing. So this doesn't qualify as a story, and it's barely a scene. But I think it's all I need, really--just knowing that the friendship survives, and other possibilities are left open.

Disclaimer: Per my finale-scene contract with Brannon Braga, I get paid for this snippet even if it ends up on the cutting room floor.

Scene: A Starfleet hearing. Onlookers, media, admirals, with Janeway, Chakotay, and the Maquis crew all standing in a row. The verdict on the
Maquis has just been anounced: exoneration and the honoring of all field promotions. Great excitement ensues, relatives and colleagues congratulate all, reporters jockey for interviews and quotes.

Just before the throng pulls them away from each other, Janeway leans towards Chakotay and says quietly:

"Dinner tonight, right?"

"See you then."

They are then both distracted by others, and the merriment continues until the scene fades.
