When it is time to pray, a Muazzin (caller) will recite the Adhan (call to prayer). Face the direction of the Kaaba (Qibla). You may recite the Adhan silently to yourself along with the Muazzin. Adhan ALLAHU AKBAR God is the greatest ALLAHU AKBAR God is the greatest ALLAHU AKBAR God is the greatest ALLAHU AKBAR God is the greatest ASHHADU ANLA ILAHA ILLALLAH I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah ASHHADU ANLA ILAHA ILLALLAH I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah ASHHADU ANNA MUHAMMADAR RASULULLAH I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God ASHHADU ANNA MUHAMMADAR RASULULLAH I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God HAYYA ALAS SALAH Come to prayer HAYYA ALAS SALAH Come to prayer HAYYA ALAL FALAH Come to your Good HAYYA ALAL FALAH Come to your Good ALLAHU AKBAR God is the Greatest ALLAHU AKBAR God is the Greatest LA ILAHA ILLALLAH There is no diety but Allah Before Fajr Salat, these extra two lines are added: HAYA ALAL FALAH ASSALATU KHAYRUM MINAN NAUM Salah is better than sleep ASSALATU KHAYRUM MINAN NAUM Salah is better than sleep |
No particular posture is taken during the Adhan, however, if you are praying in congregation, you can start to make your lines. Lines should be shoulder to shoulder, with no empty spaces. The line should face in the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah. |
Salat There are five obligatory prayers, in addition to several optional ones. All prayers follow the same basic format. All that differs is the number of rakat. Fajr: 2 rakat Zuhr: 4 rakat Asr: 4 rakat Maghrib: 3 rakat Isha: 4 rakat Salat Opening ALLAHU AKBAR God is the greatest SUBHANAKA ALLAHHUMMA WA BI HAMDIKA Oh God, Glorified, praise-worty WATABARAKAS MOKA WATA'ALA JADDOKA and blessed is Thy Name and exalted Thy Majesty WA LA ILAHA GHAYROKA and there is no deity worthy of worship except Thee. A'U ZU BIL LA HI MINASHAITANIR RAJIM I seek refuge in Allah from the rejected Satan The First/Third Rakat After this opening, recite the first Surah, Al-Fatiha: BISMI LA'HIR RAHMAN IR RAHIM In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful ALHAMDO LIL LAHI RAB BIL A'LAMIN Praise be for God, Lord of the worlds. AR RAHMAN IR RAHIM the Beneficent, the Merciful MALIKI YAU MID DIN Master of the Day of Judgement IYYA KA NA BU DO WA IYYA KA NAS TAEEN Thee alone we worship and to Thee alone we turn for help IH DI NAS SI RA TAL MUS TA QEEMA Guide us in the straight path. SIRA TAL LA ZINA AN AMTA ALAIHIM the path of those whom You favoured GHAIRIL MAGH DU BI ALAIHIM and who did not deserve Thy anger WA LAD DALL LIN or went astray AMIN Now recite another passage of the Qur'an. Some scholars say that one must recite a full Surah. Others say reciting three verses are enough. Several early Makkan Surahs fulfil both these requirements. Some good surahs for beginners are: Al 'Asr (103), Al Fil (105), Quraysh (106), Al Kawthar (108), Al Nasr (110), Al Ikhlas (112), Al Falaq (113), Al Nas (114). BIS MILL LA HIR RAHMAN IR RAHIM In the Name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful. QUL HO WA LAHAO AHAD Say: Allah is one and the only God. ALLAH HUS SA MAD Allah, upon whom all depend. LAM YALID WA LAM YU LAD He begets not, nor is He begotten WA LAM YA'KUL LA HU KUFU WAN AHAD and there is nothing which can be compared to Him. ALLAHU AKBAR God is the Greatest SUBHA NARAB BI YAL AZIM Glory to my Lord the great. SUBHA NARAB BI YAL AZIM Glory to my Lord the great. SUBHA NARAB BI YAL AZIM Glory to my Lord the great. SAMI ALLAHU LI MAN HAMI DAH God has heard all who praise Him. RAB BA NA LAKAL HAMD Our Lord: Praise be to Thee. SUBHANA RAB BI YAL A'LA Glory to my Lord the most high. BUHANA RAB BI YAL A'LA Glory to my Lord the most high. End of first rakat. Now return to a standing position and begin again from reciting Surah al-Fatiha |
When the Takbir (Allahu Akbar) is said, raise hands in lines with ear lobes. |
After the takbir, take your hands and fold them either on your chest or on your stomach, with the right hand over the left. Different schools of thought have evidence for several different hand positions at this point in prayer. |
Now you move into Ruku while saying Takbir. Bend and place your hands on your knees. |
Return to a standing position, with your arms at your side or lightly clasped in front. |
While saying the Takbir, move to the Sajdah. Here you prostrate on the ground with your forehead, knees, nose and palms of both hands touching the ground. |
After reciting SUBHANA RAB BI YAL A'LA at least three times, sit upright with knees still on the ground. After a pause, recite the Takbir and prostrate again to perform the second Sajdah. |
The second Sajdah |

While reciting the Tashahhud, raise the index finger of your right hand, as a symbol of the unity of God. |
Congratulations! You have made it through two rakat! If you are praying Zuhr, Asr, or Isha, go back to Surah al-Fatiha and repeat the rakats twice more. The only change is that you do not need to recite another Surah after al-Fatiha. Instead, continue on to ruku. If you are praying Maghrib, go back and make one more rakat. This rakat should be like the second rakat, where you stay seated after Sajadah. When you have completed the Fourth Rakat of Zuhr, Asr or Isha - the Third Rakat of Maghrib - or the Second Rakat of Fajr - continue: ALLA HUM MA SAL LI ALA MUHAMMAD DIN WA AL'A AALI MUHAMMADIN O Allah, exalt Muhammad and the followers of Muhammad. KA MAA SAL LAY TA ALA IMBRAHEEMA WA ALA AALI IBRAHEEMA As Thou did exalt Ibrahim and his followers INNA KA HAMEEDUM MAJEED Thou ar the praised, the Glorious. ALLAHUM MA BAA RIK ALA MUHAMMADIN O Allah, bless Muhammad WA ALA AALI MUHAMMADIN and his followers KA MAA BA RAK TA ALA IBRAHEEMA WA ALA AALI IBRAHEEMA as Thou has blest Ibrahim and his followers INNA KA HAMEEDUM MAJEED Thou art the Praised, the Glorious ASSALAMU ALAIKUM WA AHMATULLAH Peace be on you and Allah's blessings ASSALAMU ALAIKUM WA AHMATULLAH Peace be on you and Allah's Blessings |
Turn your face to the right as you say the salaams |
Turn your face to the left as you say these salaams. |
This concludes the basic salat! Congratulations! Remember, take things slowly. The Sahaba had 23 years to learn Islam. You do not need to learn prayer in a day. Take it slow, and it will come to you. As you advance, there are different du'as you can add into salat. However, for the beginner, stick with this until you are comfortable. All Good is from Allah (swt) and anything wrong is from me alone. If you find a mistake on this page please please email me and I will correct it, InshaAllah. |
Written below is the basics of Salat. To aid you in learning to pray, you can cut and paste the texts into a word document. From there, print it out and paste it onto index cards. You can lay the cards down in front of you as you learn, or even hold them in your hands as you pray. Something else that helped me greatly when I struggled with salat is to read one line in Arabic and then read the meaning in english. When I just read it in Arabic, I did not quite feel it. However, by alternating between Arabic and English, soon, I could understand what I was saying in Arabic, and salat became much more meaningful to me. So, without further ado, I give you the Basics of Salat: |
