When Columbine H.S. won the football championship last month, I was inspired
to write the following poem. Here goes:

Columbine, A Bittersweet Victory

I do not know your suffering
There is no way for me to understand
But when disaster struck your town last spring
This nation opened up its hand.
You have tried to move on with your lives
You have been anything but idle
Together you overcame adversity
To win that football title.
You have proven all those skeptics wrong
Those who said it can't be done
You played with undivided pride
You fought with your heart and won.
With faith and strength you have helped
To turn your loss into a gain
Although it will never be forgotten
You have helped to numb the pain.
Life has knocked you down on your knees
But you did not let it beat you
With the unity and faith you hold
No one could defeat you.
Sometimes life can be thrown in disarray
And your dreams are ripped apart
For you to fight through those blood and tears
Says something special about your heart.
You played with that undying spirit
That is impossible to hide
Some may say it wasn't fair for you
To have God on your side.
You've exchanged those screams of sorrow
For victorious shouts out loud
My heart goes out to you, Columbine
You make this nation proud.
