The Lloyd Family

1. Edward Lloyd. Born 1806, birthplace ? Liverpool, England(1)(4). Arrived in the Fremantle colony of Western Australia 17th January 1830 on the "Skerne", departed Liverpool, England, via the Cape of Good Hope, with eighteen passengers on board(2). Edward was 24 years of age when he arrived. He was an indentured farm labourer for Mr Archibald Butler at York, Western Australia(1). He ? married the same year. There are no registry records in the state prior to 1841, so his wife's / partener's name has not yet been determined. Mr Butler, a merchant of Liverpool, was also the part owner of the "Skerne" with his brother John, and they were on board when it arrived in the colony(1)(2)(4). In 1855, at the time of his son Henry's marriage, Edward's occupation is given as "Groom". His whereabouts at this time is not known.

No record of Edward Lloyd or Archibald Butler can be found on the first census of the colony taken in July 1832. I have also checked the 1836 and 1837 census, and they are absent. It is entirely possible that they were on board the "Skerne". A friend and business partner of Mr Butler, a Mr Alfred Waylen, who also arrived on the "Skerne" is noted as having left the colony in July 1831(1) Mr Waylen was on the census Mising Persons list(3), where Edward and Mr Butler were not. I have also checked the Deaths in The Colony 1830-1832, and neither is on that list. Mr Waylen did return at a later date as he died in the colony in 1856(1).

The "Skerne' does show up on shipping records in Victoria, Australia, where it made several voyages over the next decade, carrying small numbers of passengers and cargo between ports of South Eastern Australia and Tasmania. The earliest record of the 'Skerne" that I have found is 3rd of May 1843, when it sailed from Sydney to Newcastle and Launceston, with a cargo of coal. The agents were Hently and Co. Unfortunatley no crew list was included. I have not been able to find Edward Lloyd or Mr Butler on any manifest as yet. Nor have I been able to find any record of Edward Lloyd after he arrived in Western Australia, place and date of death are unknown.

I have surmised that Edward may have ended up as a crew member of the "Skerne", and settled outside of Western Australia.

Gen. 2. Henry Lloyd, son of Edward Lloyd, born 1830, in Western Australia,(4) No record of Henry being baptised (there was only one church in the colony at the time of his birth). His date of birth taken from the Dictionary of Western Australians, does concur with the age given on his marriage certificate. He married on the 7th March 1855, by License, in the Church Of St. John, Fremantle, Western Australia(5), Anne (Annie) WILLIAMS, born 1834, in Dublin Ireland. Daughter of William Williams, farmer. Anne was residing at Guildford, West Australia at the time of her marriage(5)(7). See Witnesses to the marriage. Henry's occupation on his marriage certificate is given as "Shepherd". After he moved to South Australia, he is believed to have worked as a woodcutter, and Labourer. Henry may have died in 1885, at Forest Range, South Australia(8)(burial place unknown), and Ann died in 1909 and is buried at Houghton cemetry, South Australia(8).

Anne Williams arrived in the colony at Fremantle, Western Australia, on the 14th October 1854, on the "Esmerelda".(6)
