Sticks mainly to higher elevations (up to 13,000 feet), this species takes it's common name from Mount Shasta in California.
In higher elevations, it sticks mainly at or above treeline. However, at lower elevations, it sticks mainly to meadows and streams, forest clearings, and prarie lands.
Ranges from eastern California and Oregon through central Colorado and the Rockies.
Adult coloration is blue-violet or silvery lilac-blue. (Females can be brown or blue, with wider margins) Underside of wings in both sexes is grey and white. Hindwing underside has a distinct row of metallic green dots, bordered by orange crescents, which are themselves bordered by white triangles which point towards brown dots.
