Species Summary

Above, wings are generally covered with a brilliant iridescent blue (more subdued in females) with blackish margins. Undesides are pictured above.

Eggs may be found on Mistletoes (Phoradendron), a parasitic plant found on many trees (oaks/walnuts/cottonwood/sycamore/juniper).

Larva are green with a darker black stripe, yellowish stripes along sides near the 'legs', and covered in short orange hair.

Pupa are mottled dull black/brown, and usually overwinter.

Flight range from coast to coast in the near-south, occasionally wandering north as far as Illinois, New York, and Oregon.

Commonly referred to as a 'purple' hairstreak.
