First International Meeting on Vegetarianism and
Animal Rights in Spain
Tossa de Mar 5-8 June 1997
For four days in June the Europark Hotel in Tossa de Mar was taken over by vegetarians
and animal rights activists from all parts of Spain as well as from other parts of Europe
and the United States. The animal protection society APAP and the IVU
brought individuals and groups together to fight against cruelty to animals and to promote
a healthier lifestyle based on respect for all living beings.
Tossa de Mar, is a Mediterranean town located in the Costa Brava where bullfights are
banned and there is a sanctuary for more than 600 abandoned animals which is run by Chari
Cruz of APAP Tossa..
There were talks by a number of people from various countries.
Vicki Moore (UK) described how she had been seriously injured by a bull during a
village "blood fiesta" in Coria (Spain) and was lucky to escape with her life,
but this has not stopped her organisation FAACE (Fight Against Animal Cruelty in
Europe) in its campaings.
Dr. Priscilla Cohn (Ferrater-Mora), from Pennsylvania, spoked of the campaign for the recognition of animals as sentient beings.
Other topics included the advantages of a healthy diet for the sake of animals, humans
and the environment from Francisco Martin (Spain), IVU Hon.General
Secretary, the benefits of raw food from Balta Lorenzo (Spain) from Casa de
Salud "El Caño", Magdalena Pelegrin Berge from the French
Anti-Vivisection League, Stéphanie Dartinet from WSPA (World Society
for the Protection of Animals) and the lawyer Carles Sòliva who spoke of the lack
of legislative measures in Spain to protect animals against cruelty.
Conference attracted considerable media coverage and brought together activists from
all over the Iberian peninsula to campaign for the reform of the penal code to make
cruelty to animals a punishable offence and to implement the necessary strategies and
actions to end bullfighting and other atrocities.
