The Boulder Beagle Brigade

We adopted Algernon, our mighty 19"/43lbs male from a local pet shop when he was 5 months old. He was born April 12, 1996 and shares his birthday with his human father. Algernon had been at the pet store since he was weaned, and his legs were very bowed. We had visited Alg at the shop regularly and in July 1996 we expressed concern to the shop owner that his legs seemed to be getting worse. We were informed that the shop planned to return him to the breeder (for almost certain destruction). As this was obviously an intolerable solution, we convinced them to give him to us. Lots of walking, leg-splinting and love later, his legs are just fine. At the local vet, they call him "the wild man," and indeed he is. However, he is also exceedingly well behaved (if a bit stubborn and a little loud) and extraordinarily gentle. He is most amusing- - vocal and expressive -- when disgusted, he likes to mutter terrible beagley things under his breath.

Little Abigail was adopted in July, 1998 from the vet school in Ft. Collins, CO. She is 16.5" and was born on March 17, 1997 (St. Patty's Day!). Abigail has filled out nicely from a rather emaciated 16lbs to about 30lbs. Abigail was part of a lab experiment program, and unfortunately did not receive any human socialization. She loves other dogs, but can be awfully shy around people.

She is very sweet and gentle and has made great progress. She likes to be patted and to have her belly scratched and she loves to be outside. Although still skitish, she can be very playful and rambunctious. She loves to play chase and likes to run. She has learned to respond to the command "go beagle go" and will run circles on her leash as fast as she can! Whe will also jump on her brother Algernon's head, and grab his feet, trying to goad him into a good game of beaglly chase.
