MABON - September 20-23

Mabon is a Welsh name meaning "great son," and refers to the Son of the Great Mother; The Son of Light. Other cultures also identified with this Celtic figure. In ancient Rome he was known as Mercury or sometimes Apollo. Christian Britain replaced Mabon with St Michael, to whom churches on many sacred Pagan sites were erected. The Fall Equinox became known as the Christian Feast of Michaelmas. This Sabbat is also known as the Fall or Autumnal Equinox and celebrates the end of harvest. This is the second of two holidays where the day and night are equal. On this day, the Sun again passes the equator, this time heading south. The Celtic traditions celebrates with the "Dance of Lugh". It is a dance that ends with the felling of the last shaft of grain. It is symbolically held that within this shaft Lugh has hidden, but with His death, His sacrifice, we live through His abundance. This is time for thanksgiving, evaluation and meditation. Taking stock in what you have received and preparation for the dark days of winter.
