As I watch the news regarding the Omagh bombing and the rising casualty list, my heart goes out to the victims and their families. Safe now, but remembering the feeling of helplessness and despair makes it all the more hurtful. I just woke from sedation and turned on the news to listen to the latest reports live in total disbelief - wondering what I could have done. As I sit in this bed, I recalled watching the video called "The Principal". It occurred to me that, like the Principal in the movie who called all the students together shouted two words - "NO MORE!", Ireland and the world needs to rise up and shout the same, with voice, action and intent. NO MORE !!!!.
These two words should be shouted out in Ireland from the Northern most tip to the Southern most shore. And around the world from the shores of Japan - West to California.
No More - shootings, stabbings, intimidation, discrimination
No More - bombs, bullets, rocket launchers
No More - pipe bombed houses
No More - inciting to riot or any other violence
No More - faith discrimination
No More - teaching kids how to hate
No More - painted curb stones and flag lined streets
No More - ribbons around the trees.
No More - military/paramilitary intrigue
No More - police partiality
No More - HATE
No More - assassinations
No More - "color" marches
No More - drunken bonfire nights on the 12th of July
No More - zealous hate sprouting politicians and clergy
No More - babies, siblings and parents sent to their graves
No More - parents and siblings having to grieve
No More - grief
No More - anger, fear and aggression of any kind.
NO MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At the Memorial Service on the Saturday after the bombing Juliet Turner from Dromore near Omagh sang a song to the 40,000+ people gathered there as she stood on the steps of the Cathedral in Omagh. It is called "Broken Things" and my ain't that the truth !!
But it isn't new
It's been used and broken
And only comes in blue
It's been down a long road
And it got dirty on the way
If I give it to you will you make it clean
And wash the pain away
You can have my heart
If you don't mind broken things
You can have my heart if you don't mind these tears
Well I heard that you make old things new
So I give these pieces all to you
If you want it you can have my heart
So beyond repair
Nothing I could do
I tried to fix it myself
But it was only worse when I got through
Then you walked right into my darkness
And you speak words so sweet
And you hold me like a child
Till my frozen tears fall at your feet
You can have my heart
If you don't mind broken things
You can have my heart if you don't mind these tears
Well I heard that you make old things new
So I give these pieces all to you
If you want it you can have my heart
