The small twin-tailed Arhopala abseus
abseus is one of the many species of the genus Arhopala. The
numerous species of this genus are rather difficult to identify due to
the large number of butterflies which resemble each other superficially.
The species of the abseus
group differ structurally from all the other species of Arhopala
in having a short white-tipped tail at vein 3 of the hindwing, besides
a normal tail. The male of this species is a deep lustrous blue above,
with dark borders. The underside as seen here is distinctive of the species
and is quite easily distinguised from the other Arhopalas. This
species frequents lowland forest, and is encountered seasonally in Singapore. |
