The
Tailless Line-blue, like its close cousin, the Common Line Blue (Prosotas
nora superdates) is a small butterfly, with a wingspan of about 10-12mm.
In the male, the upperside is a bluish purple with a very narrow black
border on the forewing above. The female is dark brown above with
an almost imperceptible blue basal area. The undersides are greyish
unlike the ochreous base colour of Prosotas nora.
The butterfly has a restless
flight, and seldom seems to stop for long. When it occurs, the species
tends to appear in relatively large numbers and remains abundant for a
few days, after which it disappears without a trace. It is often
found in the vicinity of the roadside trees Madras Thorn (Pithecelobium
dulce) and the Rain Tree (Samanea saman) suggesting that the
caterpillar may prefer either of these trees as its host plant. |
