Grizzly Creek Tree-sits Sieged by PL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At approximately 11:30 Am on Wednesday morning, December 9, Humboldt County Sheriffs Deputies and employees of the Pacific Lumber Company arrived at the site of a multiple tree-sit conducted by Earth First! activists in the Grizzly Creek area, 18 miles east of the town of Carlotta, CA, in an attempt to evict the activists from trees being occupied. Earth First! tree-sitters have been living high in the branches of several redwood trees at the site of the recent death of David Gypsy Chain, in an effort to protect the scene of Chain's death while calling for a thorough and independent investigation to occur. Chain was killed on September 17, 1998, while protesting an illegal logging operation, by a tree which was purposely felled in his direction by a Pacific Lumber logger.
As of this report, PL climbers have managed to ascend the trees and remove platforms, food, water, and equipment from the tree-sitter's perches. The activists themselves remain in the trees however, physically locked to branches with the aid of kryptonite locks and metal "lock box" sleeves. North Coast Earth First! has called for people to come to the area to support and re-establish the tree-sits. For information call 707-825-6598.
