My grandfather and greatgrandfather's Gallagher and Rowley worked for various lines in Illinois & the Midwest. My Grandfather, Frank W. Gallagher worked as a brakeman for the Wabash line. (Click here for a history of the railroad in Menard County.) I grew up listening to the sound of the trains through Springfield and Athens.. Their melancholy, mournful rich thunder and rattle lulled me to sleep during my childhood. |
