Trail 512 from Trail 535 to Shedroof Mountain |

The Salmo Divide Trail (Trail 535) connects the Salmo Pass Trailhead with the Shedroof Divide Trail (Trail 512). Upon reaching the 535-512 Junction on this hike, I proceeded along Trail 512 towards Shedroof Mountain. The junction is at an elevation of 6200 feet and the distance from the 535-512 Junction to Shedroof Mountain is about a mile.
The first half mile consists of a series of switchbacks and is fairly steep, but it levels off around 6400 feet and then begins a gradual descent until it reaches the trail that leads to the remains of the old fire lookout atop Shedroof Mountain at 6764 feet (per USGS Quandrangle).
Trail 512 itself does not go to the top of Shedroof Mountain.

The old fire lookout on Shedroof Mountain was one of a dozen "Nezperce R-3" cabins. Jerry Ellafson was the noted lookout on duty in 1933. For stories about Jerry, refer to the third edition of Fire Lookouts of the Northwest by Ray Kresek. |
