...HOW I START MY PUPPIES... Puppies are whelped on the back porch. They become used to normal sounds; vacuum, banging pans at feeding time. We take many trips into the house to experience rugs, linoleum, & all the rest of house sounds & feel. When older, they go out to play in a dirt pen. This contains a slated pallet, open-ended barrel, pile of wood, old tire, small pool (in the summer) & rock pile. Why? So these objects are a part of their life early on. They learn to climb “open” stairs to the porch & experience the outside uneven ground etc. When old enough, they are introduced to goats, sheep, cats, horses & chickens. Just as “imprinting” foals produces sound horses, imprinting is vital to produce a sound puppy that is curious & outgoing about new adventures. I do not believe in leaving puppies together when they start the dominance fighting. It is then time to put them in new homes or separate them. I do not kennel my animals on concrete. Concrete is hard on growing legs & also imprints puppies to eliminate on that surface. Many kennel-raised puppies will pick the concrete surface of your patio or garage to do their “job"! Concrete may be "easier" to clean, but I prefer a natural surface for rearing our puppies. Thank you and enjoy your visit! Joy |

...INTRODUCTION... Hello, let me introduce myself. My name is Kathleen Joy Larsen. Years ago (in the ‘50s) I owned & campaigned a lovely Reg. German Shepherd dog named Ch.Von Schrief’s Ivan. He became the 10th dog in the nation at the Grand Victor show. He was a dog of great substance & of course in my mind’s eye one of the great Shepherds of that day. At that time the German Shepherd dog was bred to the same Standard in Germany and to my knowledge all over the world. Imported dogs where hard to spot & were crossed into for new blood. |

...MY GOALS... It is my goal to breed the German Shepherd dog of the late '40s and '50s. To me, these dogs were more uniform in type with sound dispositions. They were participating as Seeing Eye dogs, in police work, Army, Service dogs and in Search and Rescue. They were seen as sound family dogs. They were solid in conformation and mainly of the same type. This is the goal of my breeding program. My shepherds could be classified as reliable, of even temperament, outgoing with a strong herding instinct. Conformation is big boned, strong, pleasing to look at with lovely heads. Thus far ears have all come up in good time. We are not a kennel. My dogs live with me. There are no favorites. I am as concerned about their mental health as I am about their conformation and good nutrition. I enjoy the old type Shepherd that did his work, played with the kids and had the good sense to come in, lie down and rest. Disposition, working and social traits become genetic after a few generations of breeding. We emphasize sound temperaments. |
