The LORD Is My Shepherd

A Psalm of David.

1

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3

He restoreth my soul:

he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;

thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

thou anointest my head with oil;

my cup runneth over.

6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

We often hear this preached at funerals but this message is actually written to Christians that are alive.  This is our daily walk with the Lord.  Think about the text for a few minutes if you would.

In verse 1, the Lord is referred to as our Shepherd.  The word Shepherd means: One who hears, guards, and tends sheep.

“What more should I want?”  This is saying that the Lord should be the most important person in our lives.

 Jesus himself call the church sleep in John 10:11.

“I am the good Shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life of the sheep.

John 10: 14-15  “I am the good Shepherd: I know my own sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me and I know the father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.

In verse 2, you see the Lord leading his sheep to green pastures.  This is saying he leads us to the good things in life.  “He leads us beside the still waters”.  This means that where JESUS leads us is peaceful.

In verse 3, “He restoreth my soul”.  At different times in our lives, we are in need of being restored.  The Lord will restore us if we ask.

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.  This means as we live day by day the Lord will show us right from wrong, if we will listen.

In verse 4, Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

This verse is talking about as we walk in our daily lives and the devil comes against us the Lord is there with us.  This is also saying since the Lord is with us we do not have to fear the devil.  Many people believe that the rod and the staff in this verse is the Lord always correcting us.  But Shepherds us the rod and staff as the protection for the sheep when the sheep tends to run off and try to wander away.  The Shepherd takes the rod and tenderly guides the sheep back into the path of righteousness.

In verse 5, “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies, thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

In this verse, it talks about the table that the Lord sets before us each day.  The Lord always makes sure we have just what we need.  The LORD is so good to us.  Even in the sight of our enemies, he is there with us preparing for his the best things in life.   Notice the verse says “thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over”.   This verse makes me want to shout in the Lord.  The oil is a type of the Holy Spirit in this verse and the cup is our body.   This is saying that as we walk day to day with the Lord he will give us more than we can handle in his spirit if we just walk with him and open our hearts to him.

In verse 6, “Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

This is saying as we walk with the Lord day to day we should be full of goodness and mercy each day of our lives.   The “HOUSE” is talking about Heaven.   PRAISE TO GOD. ;0)
