Rhodec ASID Student Chapter Newsletter
February 2008
Hi all! Like most of you, I also love designing, and have decided to start Rhodec International for the experience & degree. I've taken a few design courses at the local colleges and find this program the best choice for me.
My design experience is mostly hands-on experience. I started a Design/Workroom Studio in 1999 specializing in Soft Furnishings (www.HartsDesigns.com). I worked as Design Consultant at House of Denmark for 2 1/2 years designing spaces using transitional furniture, rugs and accessories. (www.Houseof Denmark.com).
Besides continuing H'Arts Designs I presently work at Expo Design Center in Georgia specializing in the Bath Department.
I love traveling with my boyfriend, cooking, great movies, friends and fabulous design :).
I'd like to hold the position of Secretary because of the somewhat isolating aspect of our online school and want to participate in as many ways as possible.
One of the ways I can start is by utilizing my organizational skills and past experience as office manager, paralegal and designer.
I look forward to getting to know you all!

Kim Jahnz is currently working for CA as a Technical Specialist in the ESM product Line specializing in Network Management Systems. Prior to that Kim worked for Aurora Health Care where she was a Lead Systems Management Analyst for the Corporate Enterprise Network, including the implementation, design and support of CA Spectrum and Health. These solutions allowed AHC to monitor and report on all network devices, servers and applications. Kim developed and integrated a solution that is vendor neutral, allowing any data from any source to be fed into Spectrum. This integrated view gives AHC a "complete" end-to-end look at the user experience. In 1999 Kim received Best Honorable Mention from Network World for the 1999 User Excellence Award for her work with Enterprise Management Systems. In 2003 Kim received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Aprisma. She founded the Midwest Spectrum User Group, speaks frequently at User Conferences and her article "Guide to Network Management" was featured in the March 13, 2006 issue of Network magazine.
Kim's real passion is for Design and after many years of waiting in 2006 she started working towards her goal. In 2007 Kim completed a diploma program and became a Certified Interior Decorator and in May of 2007 started towards her goal of Interior Designer with Rhodec.
"I am looking for an opportunity that will allow me to work within and around design. My current career is very technical and doesn't allow me to get close to the colour, textures and images involved in design. By acting as Secretary I will have a daily dose of elements and ideas behind design. It will hopefully allow me to grow and mature as I work toward being an Interior Designer

It's that time of year again when the holidays are over, we're all back to our day to day responsibilities and commitments and, for some of us,  the kids are back in school allowing us that little bit of extra time to apply ourselves to our studies once again. It's also that time of year when we contemplate on what our fellow students and board members have done for our Chapter - and this has been an amazing year! But what is also important is what each one of us can offer to our Chapter, our fellow students and, by extension, ourselves. The Chapter is, after all, what each of us makes it.

Candidate Profiles
Running for President:
Hi! I've been a student with Rhodec since August 2003. I've been married for 18 yrs with 4 children and we currently live in Cincinnati, OH although we have lived all over the US and overseas. I have served as President-Elect and Newsletter Chair for the Rhodec ASID Student Chapter for the past year. I began writing for the newsletter about 2 years ago and was eager to take on the responsibility of Newsletter Chair when the position opened. Through my involvement with that, I became one of the main organizers of the 2007 Online Symposium. Although it was a lot of work and time commitment, the success of the event made it all extremely rewarding, Sometime during the blur of that acitivity, I was nominated as Pres-Elect and once again accepted the challenge with enthusiasm. As part of my 'duties' I attended the ASID Leadership Conference in Chicage, IL in July, 2007. I have to say that I felt very fortunate to get the opportunity to experience the conference and felt that it was more of a privelege than an obligation. I learned so much about the ASID organzation and leadership skills that I hope to use in the coming year as President. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the 2007-2008 Student Chapter Board Members and I'm excited about creating and working with a dynamic chapter for the year 2008-2009! Along with my duties on the RASC Board and Rhodec studies, my other passions and hobbies are traveling (especially if it involves meeting other Rhodec students), listening to live bands and dancing! Even though it will be hard following in the wake of Kelly Garcia's incredible leadership, I am looking forward to an exciting, challenging and rewarding term as President and serving our student members!

Came across these really informative articles on sustainable design that I thought would be extremely useful and educational to fellow students.

The first is about how
Polished Concrete may be a viable alternative to other flooring materials through new processing methods.

Did you know that for the average commercial building in the U.S., more than half as much money is spent per year on cleaning as on energy? The second article
Design for Cleanability looks at design for cleanability in commercial and institutional buildings, an issue that many interior designers may forget to consider when designing interiors but which may be a serious consideration when designing commercial interiors such as hospitals and hotels.

I recently watched a great documentary on a Dutch architect who is designing houses that will float as rising waters swell. The Netherlands have suffered a great deal from floodwaters making it necessary to find ways to deal with this recurring phenomenon.
I wanted to find out more about this and came across this descriptive article on NPR
"Dutch Architects Plan for a Floating Future".
Wouldn't it be interesting and a great challenge  to design the interior of one of these fab houses?!

I have been a Rhodec student since 2006 and joined RASC in 2007. I volunteered to help with the Online Education Symposium for the World Days of Design, and am still amazed by how much I learned from theat one experience! Not only did I gain valuable knowledge and tips as a newcomer to the profession from a variety of presenters, but I had the pleasure of meeting and working with our RASC members, expecially the Board members. The energy and commitment of our members inspired me to agree to take a more active role this year.
Maintaining our communications for the Chapter is vital, and I will do my best to keep our recently updated website current and relevant.
I have been married for twenty years and homeschooled our daughter up until her entry to college this year. I have worked as a paramedic all my adult life and hope to bring my experience with medical facilities and needs to interior design. I now have the time to pursue a lifelong interest in design and Rhodec has allowed me to combine study with my medical and freelance publishing work. I love history and historic preservation, reading and Asian films and hope to spend some empty nest time finally traveling with my husband and seeing as much of the world as I can.

Running for President-Elect:
Robin LaMonte
I attended college in the 70's and studied interior design and psychology at the University of Wisconsin. I left college after 3 years to pursue a career as a flight attendant. I flew for 10 years and ended that career to begin my current role as a mother to 4 wonderful children! I met my husband on a flight!
As my children reached high school and college age, I wanted to go back to work and decided to open a little design business. I started it 4 years ago and was on national television and published in local shelter magazines but I felt I was missing something by not having a design degree and belonging to ASID. ASID is becoming a force to be reckoned with and many designers are feeling the need to join ASID, but can't because they lack the college credits. I chose Rhodec because their student members won the ASID student competitions and to me a virtual college best suits my design business. I am very excited about Rhodec and have told many other designers who want to join ASID to start taking classes with me. If I can go back to school in my 50's why not them!
I am on many boards for local charities because I feel we should give freely of our time to others less fortunate. I have many wonderful ideas for Rhodec and we can really make this virutal college a wonderful student chapter for ASID. Being in a virtual college may lack face to face networking, but I feel I alreaady have a lot of wondrful friends at Rhodec!
