Greetings Students!
By now I hope that you have explored the RealWorldDesignWeek Web site at
http://www.asid.org/rwdw for details on this exciting program and to meet national spokesperson, Matt Lorenz, Allied Member ASID and winner of Bravo network's Top Design! To recap, during RealWorldDesignWeek, October 19-25, 2008, ASID student members nationwide will participate in one-day shadow experiences with ASID professional and allied members, as well as Industry Partner representatives on-site work locations. In addition, the week will be book-ended by a pair of online instructional seminars-Prepare and Position-hosted by prominent guest speakers. This innovative program exists exclusively for ASID student members!
When can I sign up?
Student members can sign up for
RWDW May 17th-31st. In general terms, students will log on to a secure RealWorldDesignWeek site, browse through an online archive of shadow day opportunities using search functions by name, city or zip code and self-select their desired shadow day. The process will be much like searching for and booking a hotel room online. Shadow day selections will be first come, first served, so students should sign up early! More detailed instructions on how to sign up as a student will be sent to you via e-mail in the coming weeks as well as reminders. These instructions will be posted on the RealWorldDesignWeek Web site.
What's in it for me?
This program offers an easy, free opportunity to receive an exclusive inside look at the interior design world. You will feel inspired, informed and prepared for graduation and career options that lie beyond. RealWorldDesignWeek will enable you to network with your shadow day host and other industry professionals, possibly expanding the experience into a long term mentoring relationship, internship or your first job! Involvement with the program is a great resume booster and you can even earn class credit by participating!
Participate in RealWorldDesignWeek (of which Rhodec is a major sponsor!) and make a difference in your life as an interior designer and ASID member. Be a part. It's your profession!

Some of the most stunning ceramic tiles I have seen belong to a group of Italian artists at DesignTale Studio. Large porcelain stoneware slabs are skillfully decorated and used to stunning effect in commercial applications. The group was formed in 2005 after fermenting in the ir minds for some time. The whole concept behind it is the return to the handmade techniques of ceramics production with artistic expression at the forefront of every project. The beauty of ceramics is the unpredictability of the outcome. The artist applies and the material reacts. Pictured are some examples of their products in various projects.

Green products designed to degrade and disappear.

On the cover of its House and Home section, the
New York Times (5/8, Fl, Green) reported that new product and furniture lines are appearing "ready to rot", or manufactured with their biodegradability in mind. The manufacturers and retailiers of the products, including New York City's Montauk Sofa are focused on product "facets you won't be able to see or feel, like wood frames from sustainably managed forests, uncoated nails, organic fabrics and stuffing" and "non-toxic dyes". Tim Zyto, chief executive of Monatauk, said his firm's first focus was having "as little impact on the environment as possible", but then, he "started to think, wouldn't it be great to have no impact?" That led him, and other industry colleagues, to "products, under the right conditions," that "would break down." The Times noted that a significant influence in this trend is "green design guru and architect" William McDonough's 2002 book, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things, which "closed-loop manufacturing" and making products that "can be 'nourishment' for something new."

Every year, usually in April, Salone Internazionale Del Mobile is drawing some 270,000 design professionals from around the globe. Everyone connected with design is heading for Milan - journalists sourcing the themes that are going to be discussed all year long after the event, designers striving to show their work, collectors and producers searching for new talents and the latest trendsetting products.
Milan Furniture Fair Highlights
Famous design week in Milan that took place this year from 16th till 21st of April is considered to be the most important week for (furniture) design world-wide. Why? Because this is the place to go if you want to learn what are the trends that are about to hit your home, but also it is a matchless occasion for an international meeting of minds, where designers' names are made and big business is done.

The figures according to the organizers statistics: this year the fair closed having seen a record number of visitors. The closing estimates point to a total number of 348,000 visitors: 29% more than the previous edition, 210,000 of whom came from abroad. 2,450 exhibiting companies ranged over a net area of 230,000 sqm, showcased the latest in domestic furnishing in all the various styles, ranging from classic to modern at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition. Here we were treated to a glimpse of the trends for the house of the future, designed with ecosustainability in mind.
Her by Fabio Novembre
The press release states that wood took on a starring role in the pavilions of Eurocucina, as well as in the spaces of the International Bathroom Furniture Exhibition, together with a classical take on the kitchen, heedful of functionality, creativity and the technology of domestic electrical appliances.
The biennial Salone Ufficio has refocused greater visibility on the office space. The Office as Creative Hub project provided schemes designed to enhance the human and creative dimension within the workplace.
Lastly, at Salone Satellite, 570 young designers and 22 international design schools with 220 students showcased ideas and projects inspired by creativity, ecology and sustainability.

It seems that the "Limited edition" trend that started probably at last year's Milan Design Week continues to grow. Among the highlights of this year's Milan fair were several products launched by Meta - a company that matches contemporary designers with 18th Century craftsmanship. One of them, probably the most impressive, is the Dutch designer Tord Boontje's Fig Leaf wardrobe - you drape your clothes on the branches of a bronze tree in its bronze and silk interior. Boontje covered his wardrobe with fig leaves as a visual pun on Adam and Eve's "clothes" in the Garden of Eden. Its price is expected to be a little more than half a million.
Patricia Urquiola Moroso - enlaced antibody
Another one of the interesting new products launched at the fair is the new chair by Her by Fabio Novembre. As they say, Fabio Novembre once more shows his obsession for the female body. Yet there is a male version on its way, called Him. Her is made from polythylene, available in black and white and suitable for in- and outdoors. The indoors-outdoors furniture was also one of the popular themes among the new furniture shown at Milan. My favourite is again the furniture by Patricia Urquiola - her new series Tropicalia for Moroso. It was part of the Little Wild Garden of Love created at the entrance of Moroso showroom. Urquiola showed another real centerpiece at the fair - her 'Bohemian' sofa for Moroso. It is soft, elegant and feminine, like most of her designs.
Tom Dixon
Every year, a designer's name is mentioned more often than the rest. This year it was probably the Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka and his Bouquet, a new chair for Italian brand Moroso. "The new chair Bouquet uplifts the sitter as well as a flower bouquet does it to the receiver. The vibrant colours would evoke one's remembrance."
This outline is neither complete nor representative of this most influential fair in the world of design, but it is impossible to see or cover everything - even if one goes there the chances are that s/he will miss more than will be able to see. But as design students there is one thing we should not miss - Salone Satellite - a show of upcoming design talents where "budding designers can blossom". The Salone Satellite follows every year an interesting theme. This yea's slogan was "Go Green!'

One of the best parts of the annual Salone del Mobile is the chance for university students to show their design work. As a result of this more than a few star designers quickly rose to fame after being discovered at this fair. Here is a link to a gallery created by designboom of the works of the students from Design Academy Eindhoven: www.designboom.com
There is a lot to learn and inspiration to gain.
Even though some critics say that survivalist spirit prevailed at the Milan Furniture Fair, there is no doubt that design has its important role in the saturated consumer culture of our time. "We did notice that exhibiting companies demonstrated their capacity to concentrate on well-defined and serious products, a reaction to world economic instability" is the positive conclusion by the editors from designboom. You can get a more detailed impression by browsing through their extensive coverage of Milan Furniture Fair with over 2,000 images:
www.designboom.com
My impressions from the fair are that this year designers are creating sensible-looking furniture that is more about utility than making a sculptural statement, as was the case in the last couple of years. What I like most is that this year was about showcasing flawless craftsmanship at the highest levels and one of the first names to mention is Tom Dixon. I like the warmth and modern elegance of old-time artisan style work with his Slab bench and Slab chairs presented alond with his famous copper lights. More notable chair designs: the elegant Allwood chairs by William Sawaya, Macrame Spider by PSM, the new wooden chair called Rotterdam for Vitra that Dutch designer Hella Jongerius has designed.Remaining on the subject of chair design it is worth mentioning the re-use of old furniture parts for constructing new chairs by the Dutch designer Jetske de Groot.

I've always said that travel is an education in its own right. Visiting different countries and cultures opens ones mind and inspires artists and designers to create beautifully diverse works of art. Our lovely Kelly Garcia who has been living in Taiwan for a few years has written an interesting account of her experiences and impressions of colourful Taiwan as she prepares to leave this beautiful country. Visit Kelly's blog and read about her insights into this fascinating culture.
