There are some people who seem to think of God as our eternal judge, ready to throw us into the firey depths of hell if we do anything wrong. They believe God has so many rigid laws and commandments because He doesn't want us to have any fun at all. Sometimes these people get their ideas from church authorities, from friends, or even from their family or their parents. I think those people really need a lesson on the nature of God! Jesus came into the world with a docterine of love, compassion, and forgiveness. There's the key word right there: forgiveness. This implies that human beings have the tendancy to sin, but more importantly, that Jesus--and therefore God--has the ability to forgive. There are so many examples of the forgiving powers of Jesus in the bible. To me though, the most amazing of these came when Jesus was on the cross. Hanging there on a cold, wooden cross, bleeding to death, with jeering crowds all around him, I would certainly understand any feelings of anger he might have had. On top of it, Jesus had done nothing wrong.... nothing at all to deserve his fate. It's not like he HAD to be there. He had a choice. He knew exactly what would happen to him, and he could have said no..... but he didn't. He chose to go through all the pain for us, at our hands. There has never been courage like that. But the most miraculous thing was that as he hung there dying, instead of shouting out curses at those who had done this to him, he cried out to God, and said, "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do." People sin, and always will. No one is free from sin, but that doesn't mean that no one gets to go to heaven. The rules that God DOES have (such as the ten commandments) are given to us out of love. When you were little and your parents tolds you not to come to close to the stove, were they trying to be mean? No, of course not. They were just trying to keep you from getting burned. It's the same thing with God. He wants us to be happy and have fun, but he doesn't want us to get hurt, or to hurt others, so he gives us rules to follow. We may not understand them all the time, but what matters is that we obey them, because they are for our own good. Why does the bible say that sex before marriage is wrong? It's fun, and it doesn't hurt anyone.... or does it? When you get an STD then you'll realize why He is so concerned about this. Or when you become pregnant and can't support your child, then you will understand. The love and forgiveness of Jesus is so great, it hagrdly be explained in words. It must be experienced for one to truly understand. So go experience it, and I can guarantee you will NEVER be the same. |
