Summary: Short ficlet. Life after death for Louis.

It‘s hard to tell when you‘ve gone insane. Louis remembered reading somewhere that repression was the human body’s way of dealing with traumatic events. Was that why this had happened to him?

He didn’t remember anything really, now. Everything was gone. His entire past was like a wet letter. The ink was blurred and unfocused and there was no reason to read it anymore. The only thing he knew for sure was who he was, now. All he knew was the things that he saw and he heard and he felt. All he knew was the emotions in his heart and the thoughts in his head. There was nothing else.

He let them have his past, he let them have his future. Those didn’t matter to him; they would not fit into his head anymore. He spoke these things aloud to himself, and he let the words be his past as he spoke them, at least until the echo died.

The only thing they could not take from him was the present. He knew that he would never change, never learn or grow. He would live forever in a present that was somehow both his past and his future.

The only constant now were flames. They grew dim in the great bland background of his memory and he said goodbye, and wished that the blonde one would not leave him.

Wished in the past tense. Would in the future. But there was nothing left for now.
