Just to show the world that smart card technologies can be extremely useful
for many other applications than just being an electronic purse, Verifone,
Inc. and Caspit Ltd. is providing a smart card system for Hebrew University
in Jerusalem that would allow the education institution to automate much
of the on-campus activities for about 30,000 students and faculty members
in the coming school year.
The UNICARD system which has the cardholder's photo, name and number
printed on will also has a microprocessor implanted so other personal information
such as academic grades, student status, eligibility and other data and
can be stored. Of course, monetary values can also be memorized for e-
commerce too.
The
students can use the card to check out books from the library, enjoy health
care services, obtain records and access special information on databases
and the Internet. VeriFone OMNI terminals are used throughout the campus
area to take care of electronic payment transactions.
Hatim Tyabji, president of VeriFone, Inc. said, "We believe smart
cards will be used in the future for a wide variety of applications, and
it is just this type of project that will demonstrate what is possible."
The UNICARD project home page is located at www.caspit.com/unicard.
