The story of Caitlin Lucy Hinds and Annie Dunphy, one of Caitlin's 32 great great great grandmothers

Annie Dunphy was born in Rathdowney County Laois in Ireland on 15 december 1845.

Annie was the youngest of the 10 children of John and Catherine Dunphy.

At the age of 9 years Annie sailed from Plymouth with her mother, father and six brothers to join another brother who was already in Sydney. The family arrived in Sydney on 15 March 1854.

Annie's parents died in 1856 and 1859 and were buried at the Parramatta cemetry. From 1856 and then 11 years Annie was looked after by an elder brother, William and his wife. In 1860 Annie moved to the Victorian goldfields Porepunkah (near Bright). She married
James Robert Crooke in 1871 and moved to Aspendale Victoria. James Robert was born on 24 July 1847 the son of James Elijah and Harriet Crooke of Bacchus Marsh Victoria.

Annie and James had 3 children - Robert James (born 19 December 1872) and Herbert Charles (born 5 April 1875) and Fenton Wallis who died 21 days old in South Melbourne in January 1881.

On 3 January 1888 at 10.45 am Annie was swimming at Mordialloc beach. Robert (15) and brother Bert (14) noticed their mother face down a long way out after being in the water swimming for 20 minutes.

Annie drowned aged 43 years.

The 2 boys were brought up by Annie's sister Sarah Harkin in Melbourne. Robert gaduated as Dux of Longerenong College (near Horsham) in 1893 with a degree in Agricultural Science. Robert taught in schools in Victoria (including Hailebury College) before travelling to Europe in the early years of the century. Robert was doing private tutoring in Paris when he met and married Alice Louise Georgette Legat, daughter of a Paris banker on 7 August 1907.

Robert and Alice returned to Australia in 1912 with their two Paris born children, Robert Jean Jacques (born 10/12/1908) and Andree Marcelle (born 17/3/1910). Andree Marcelle was a practicing physiotherapist in South Yarra and pioneered the introduction and acceptance of psychoparaflaxis in child birthing in Australia.

Robert and Alice settled in Cockatoo, Victoria, and had 3 more children - Raymond Herbert, Maurice Rene and Malcolm Georges before they were divorced in 1938.

The eldest son of Robert and Alice, Robert Jean Jacques married Claire Denecker at Caulfield on 9 April 1938. Robert and Claire had 3 children, Andree (born 6/11/1939), Robert (born 8/6/1943) and Maurice (6/5/1945).

Maurice married Dianne Pittock at Camberwell on 20 January 1971. Maurice and Dianne lived in Singapore from 1971 until December 1974. They had 2 cjildren Tessa Lea (born 21/1/1972) and Leon Rene (born 6/4/1973). On their return to Australia Maurice and Dianne lived in Camberwell and were close by when Alice Georgette Louise Crooke (nee Legat) died in November 1975 aged 87 years.

After meeting Rupert Hinds in India, Tessa travelled to and around Europe (like her great great grandfather Robert James Crooke). Tessa and Rupert were married in Sorrento on January 1999 and their first child Caitlin Lucy Hinds was born in London on 6 November 2000, 145 years after Annie Dunphy.
