Extract from a letter to Mike ? by Auntie Dot (wife of Raymond Herbert Crooke) - 8/1/001 Dear Mike, Hope you had a Merry Xmas & prosperous New Year. At long last have got around to giving you all the news of the Crook family I have. I'm so sorry my husband Ray died in September. He would have been so thrilled about your enquiries as nobody else in his family is interested. The Crook family came from England in the Bark "John Craig" which landed in Hobart Tasmania in 1832. Among the paid passengers were James Crook Mrs Crook Ellen " 13 yrs James " 12 yrs Jane " 11 yrs William " 9 yrs John " 6 yrs On landing in Tasmania James Crook became the manager of The Woolpack Inn (I think). James Crook was my husband Ray's great great grandfather. Great Great Grandfather's son was named after him but was known as his second name Elijah Crook. If you can work this out. Elijah's mother (Mrs Crook) as the story goes cleared off from her husband James in Tasmania and went off with a Mr Graham to Victoria. Elijah then when an adult joined the milatary (sic) & eventually was drafted to Melbourne in Victoria where his mother was. He did very well & evenually (sic) he bought Governor Bacchus Manor house in Bacchus Marsh in Victoria and used it to deal in horses to the army. (continued in James Robert Crook) |
