Kit and Fiona Visit Hong Kong
24th December 2005 - 1 January 2006
Lantau Island
Raymond's Travel Page
The most important tourist site on Lantau Island is the Big Buddha. Kit and Fiona's visit gave an excuse to go and see it agian - for the first time in twenty years.
Outside the Po Lin Monastery, guardians of the Big Buddha.
The steps to the big Buddha. We decided to have lunch and see the monastery first. Obviously an attempt to delay the inevitable climb as long as possible.
A bonus for us was a special performance of the Shaolin Kungfu Monks - a rather different show than the one Yoong and I had seen in Songpan: more bouncing around and no gruesome endurance tests.
Resting under trees before tackling the climb. Well, actually just long enough to take these photos.
On our way up to the Big Buddha. We found out we could only go to the very top if we bought a ticket for the temple's vegetarian meal. We did not know about this as we had lunch first, but fortunately we had kept proof that we had done so.
Looking up ....
Looking down.
Some people we met on the way.
Buddha waving goodbye to us as we made our way back down.
From the monastery we caught a bus to Tai O, a fishing village with stilt houses, which has become a bit of a tourist trap.
Tai O proved to be a very photogenic place. Kit couldn't stop taking pictures.
