DYLAN - A Song For his Engagement Party

[This was originally "DYLAN - A Song For his Twenty-first Birthday Party. I decided to recycle it for Dylan's and Rachael's engagement party. After all what's the use of writing a song to sing only once?]

In the month of October in seventy-two
                                  F                 G7
The doctor said, "Mandy, your baby is due.
C               G7               F                   C
Into this world he's about to pass through."

- But Dylan had other ideas. He had a mind of his own.
                           F                               C
They had to induce him to come out and play.
                G7                             C
Then he said, "In this hospital I'm going to stay."
        F                                   C
He stubbornly ordered his parents away. -

"I'll see you guys later at home."

There's a place they call "Kinder" where children can mix
And learn finger-painting and other good tricks,
So we enrolled Dylan before he turned six.
- But Dylan had other ideas. He had a mind of his own.
As he entered the Kinder he looked all about,
Said, "This joint's not for me", without any doubt,
So Dylan became a Kinder drop-out -
"You kids can have this on your own."

We took him to Europe when Dylan was eight.
We went to the Louvre, we went to the Tate,
To show him the sculpture and art of the great.
- But Dylan had other ideas. He had a mind of his own.
He said, "You see the paintings while I run and hide.
My brother and I will be waiting outside.
We'd rather play on the swings and the slide.
You can have the Van Goghs on your own."

We tried to get Dylan to work hard each year
To study and aim for a worthwhile career -
An accountant - a teacher - perhaps engineer.
- But Dylan had other ideas. He had a mind of his own.
He found out what fun animating could be;
He made Macca Strewth; he made ads for TV.
Now he's making (and spending) more money than me.
Just see how Momentum has grown.

When children grow up and they turn twenty-one,
They say that's when real adult life has begun.
The proud dad makes a speech for his daughter or son.
- But Dylan had other ideas. He told me one night on the phone
He said, "I don't want anything to go wrong.
If you make a speech it will be much too long.
Forget about talking and just sing me a song."
Leave the long speeches alone.

Now Dylan met Rachael at school, as you know.
Some people think they're a little bit slow;
They should have got married a long time ago
- But Dylan had other ideas. He had a mind of his own.
Now at last they've decided to be man and wife
And we hope they'll be happy the rest of their life,
Free from all trouble, and free from all strife -
Until they have kids of their own,
Cause their kids will have minds of their own.
