The Fucking Laughter

Why should you care?
You see me, you think happy thoughts.
You see me, you see laughter.
You want me to go up on that stage and put on a smile and laugh and joke and make you forget your worries and your problems and the things that upset you when I'm not providing a distraction.

You don't know that the mask comes off when I'm not up there.
You don't know that the happiness I'm giving you
comes from my deepest supplies,
the ones I store away for days where I can't deal with life.
You just want me to make you laugh or comfort you or fuel your pity or tell you everything will be better.

Even though, for me, there is no "better".

There is only "not as bad."

So smile!
Laugh!
On the outside, I'm a clown.
I'm a comedian.
I want to hear your fucking laughter
So I'll know that somewhere in this world there will be happiness.

Laugh, damn you.

Just because I'm not happy doesn't mean
that you shouldn't be.
Isn't that why I'm here?

I bring light into your life.
I'm the little smiling fucking sun that brings bright rays into your life and makes you smile and laugh and drives the dark clouds of anger or depression or anxiety away.

Never mind that on my own.
behind the mask I wear for you,
I am darkness.
When you are the sun,
Your world is black.

Nobody can light it up,
For your own light, going out, blocks out theirs, coming in.

But smile!
Laugh!
Let me hear that fucking laughter
That I give myself to create.
If ever I feel alone, I want to be able to close my eyes and hear, off in the distance, the sound of that fucking laughter.
