Lifestyle of Native Americans | ||||||||||
Lesson Plan: Technology in the Classroom: Lifestyle of the Native American. Purpose: To acquaint the student with the different lifestyles of the Native American Indians throughout the United States. Materials Needed: 3x5 index cards; Internet access; Microsoft Office; List of Native American tribes, divided by the region of the country in which they live(d). Procedure: 1. Divide class into 6 groups. Each group will select their Leader and Secretary. 2. On one side of the 3x5 cards, write down one of 6 regions: Northeast; Southeast; Southwest; Plains; Northwest; Hawaii. 3. Each Leader, without looking, will draw a card from the container. The region on the index card will identify which area of the country the tribe they represent will come from. 4. The class will break off into their individual groups and discuss their region. Using the list of tribes, they will decide which one they will research and represent. http://www.kstrom.net/isk/maps/usmapindex.html 5. The Leader will assign each member of the group an aspect of the tribal they will research: Food gathering; Religion; Housing; Battle/Sports/Game equipment/style; Art/daily living. 6. Students will search the Internet for websites and information on their tribe and area of study, reporting the findings back to their group. 7. At the end of the specified data gathering period, the each group will meet and decide on their report. Using Microsoft Word, they will write a detailed report on their findings, each student writing a report on the area they did research on. This information will also include the time periods in which their tribe existed or were at their zenith. 8. Using Microsoft Excel, the group will create a spreadsheet that includes the 4 regions from step 5, along with the Name of the tribe they are researching, years they were at their strongest and the Region they are from. 9. Using Microsoft PowerPoint, the group will create a presentation that will be given to the class, along with any displays, art, etc that may be required, or done as extra credit.
