CINEMA AND FILM

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

 

 

           

 

This semester course will trace the development of motion pictures as an art form from the 1890 through the present.  Representative selections from the various genres are screened, and then discussed in terms of art, technique, content and historical perspective, as well as directorial style.

 

** Successful completion of this course with a B or better grade will earn college credits at Mercer County Community College or William Paterson University.

Course Description:

This semester course will trace the development of motion pictures as an art form from the 1890 through the present.  Representative selections from the various genres are screened, and then discussed in terms of art, technique, content and historical perspective, as well as directorial style.

**Successful completion of this course with a B or better grade will earn college credits at Mercer County Community College or William Paterson University.

 

Proficiencies:

 

At the completion of this course the students should be able to:

 

  1. Demonstrate all safety and proper operation procedures when working with equipment and the tools/equipment associated with the medium.

 

  1. Demonstrate professionalism and the ability to work well with others.

 

  1. Demonstrate the ability to discuss the history of motion pictures and the progression of techniques and innovations in the industry.

 

  1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of vernacular and acronyms of the medium with respect to technique, style, genre, lighting and sound.

 

  1. Demonstrate the ability to understand the director’s vision for a given film.

 

  1. Demonstrate the ability to site examples of how the director employed techniques within a given film to effectively communicate his/her vision.

 

  1. Demonstrate the ability to recreate a given scene in a film with regard to all aspects of shot composition, mise-en-scene and lighting.

Course Requirements:

 

Students will be expected to:

 

1.      ATTEND CLASS REGULARLY AND PUNCTUALLY.  We will be viewing many movies and class attendance will count as a portion of your grade.

 

2.      Maintain a high level of participation and preparation and to bring necessary supplies to class daily.

 

3.      Complete all assignments.

 

4.      Operate the equipment properly and safely.

 

5.      Demonstrate a cooperative attitude and contribute to the learning process of the class.
