Term 3 Project

In this paper you will write one of your first formal reports. Most of you have written smaller versions of this. You will pick a topic, write a paper and present a 2-minute summary to the class.

Length – The paper should be at least 5 pages, but no longer than 7 pages in length. This does not include pictures, title page or anything else. The paper should be typed, 12-point font, 1-inch margins all around and double-spaced (I will measure). The title page should be first and followed by the paper and finally a bibliography.

Topic – There are a number of topics that you can use for this report. All of the topics must deal with genetic disorders. Below is a list of possible topics.  You must get your topic approved by me in writing with evidence of preliminary research.  No two students in the same class can do the same topic. Your topics should be specific. The following topics are some ideas.

Topic selection is due by  2/6   in writing or you be docked 5 points per day on your project. Make sure you have backup topics.

Writing

I understand you have not completed a full year of high school English, but your writing should still be reasonable. Make sure you spell check. I will not deduct for spelling/grammar unless you make blatant mistakes or it is obvious you did not proofread your paper.

Plagiarism

It is part of you job to use other peoples work, however, you cannot steal their words without quoting them. Use the following format.

It has been said that “Mr. Ceglie’s class is very hard” (Smith, 2002). You are listing the author and date. Sometimes, you may avoid quotes by significantly rewording information. If you have questions on this see me. Also look in your student handbook and rules for writers.  You will lose points for improper quoting. If I find copied information, you will get a 0.

Tables, Figures, Graphs – They are not necessary, and do not count toward the length, but they are often helpful. If you use them, you should refer to them in the paper.

Bibliography – You may use any sources, but you must use at least 2 Internet site and 2 articles. I warn overuse of encyclopedias, especially online ones. You should have at least 5 sources.

* Honors class- 1 article should be a research article from a science journal and include it at the end of the report*

Format – Use rules for writers or the web site I have linked to for help

Worth – The final paper is worth 100 points. I grade these tough so work hard.

Time table

1)      Topic due by 2/6/04. You need to give me your topic plus a 1-paragraph summary of the genetics of the topic. Include at least 1 cited source.

2)      Final report due by March 12 whether we drop or not.

3)      Oral presentations will follow when passed in or will take place when you are done

Grading – You will lose 15 points for every day it is late.

I will be grading on content, current or appropriate genetics information, format, bibliography, quoting, and presentation. Basically everything. Make sure you thoroughly address the genetic causes of the disease you chose.

Ideas for format

-          should begin with an introduction and end with a conclusion

-          address the causes (usually genetic) at the beginning

o       symptoms, how it is inherited, how genetics is explained

      -     be specific but not to the point where a reader would not understand you
