Club History (1979-2002)

The Rotary Club of Metro Dadiangas will be 22 years old on October 31, 2002, which date is the Charter Anniversary Day of the club.

It seems just like yesterday, when the idea of forming another club in the City of General Santos was formulated. At that time, there were only two clubs then existing in the City, the Rotary Club of General Santos City (which was chartered on March 5, 1956) and the Rotary Club of Dadiangas (which was chartered on September 8, 1975).

The provisional club was formally organized in 1979, originally with 35 members, when Rtn. Florante "Flor" Millado, then the President of the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges and Rtn. Zennelito "Zenn" Zuzon, both members of RC Dadiangas, were chosen as Interim President and Interim Secretary, respectively. The rest of the positions were filed up by the interim members of the club.

Misunderstandings, however, led to the resignation of both the Interim President and Secretary, and the remaining aspiring Rotarians were forced to install replacements and at the same time brought in additional members. Thus, during the Rotary Year 1980-1981 with the Theme "Take Time to Serve", when the club was formally chartered as Club No. 17124, in October 31, 1980 and officially became a member of Rotary International, the club officers were:

Ric Paguio assumed the Presidency of the club for the Rotary Year 1981-1982, with the theme "World Understanding and Peace Through Rotary." Regalo "Reggie" Jacot became his Secretary. It is a tribute to them and the club having hosted a successful Inter-City Forum.

Reggie Jacot eventually became the Club President for the Rotary Year 1982-1983, with the Theme "Mankind is One-Build Bridges of Friendship Throughout the World." He also chose Atty. Andres " Jun" Lorenzo as his Secretary.

Rotary Year 1983-1984 with its Theme: "Share Rotary, Serve People" would see the club having Dr. Leopoldo "Pol" Durico as President, and a ladies man, Amador "Mar" Ballicud as his Secretary. This was the time that the economy took a nosedive in the light of the Ninoy Aquino Assassination.

President Andres "Jun" Lorenzo and Secretary Leopoldo "Leo" Dumuk took over the cudgels of the club for the Rotary Year 1984-1985 with its Theme: "Discover a New World of Service." But the economy would now prove to be one of the factors on how the club performs.

The greatest effect is on membership loss, mostly from loss of classification as businesses folded up one after the other in the increasing difficult times. Affected were the tenures of the following Presidents and their Secretaries:

RY 1985-1986- Leopoldo "Leo" Dumuk as President and Secretary Pedro "Pete" Pacatang, with Rotary Theme: "You are The Key."

RY 1986-1987- President Mario "Mar" Basilio and Secretary Pedro "Pete" Pacatang, and Theme: "Rotary Brings Hope."

RY 1987-1988- President Jose "Joe" Gadayan and Secretary Carlos "Bebot" Matela. Rotary Theme: "Rotarians: United in Service, Dedicated to Peace."

It was in the RY 1988-1989, however, during the tenure of President Pedro "Pete" Pacatang, when the club made a complete turn-around. The club fellowship was turning out for the better. The karaoke craze was at its height and the club members were staying longer after meeting to extend the fellowship some more. Rotary Theme: Put Life into Rotary-Your Life."

It was even incredible during RY 1989-1990 tenure of President Abdajan "Jan" Ladjiman and Secretary Tony Vicente, with Theme: "Enjoy Rotary." Even in the absence of the club president who, as the Bank Manager of Amanah Bank, was reassigned to Metro Manila, the club continues to function.

RY 1990-1991, President Carlos "Bebot" Matela and Secretary Alex "Lex" Atilano. Rotary Theme: "Honor Rotary with Faith and Enthusiasm." PP Andres "Jun" Lorenzo drafted the sisterhood agreement between the club and the Rotary Club of Metro Cebu, which was later signed by both clubs.

RY 1991-1992, President Rosito "Chito" Dusal and Secretary Siegfred "Butch " Flores. Rotary Theme: "Look Beyond Yourself." The club ventured beyond club activities when PP Bebot Matela was appointed and served, as District Secretary.

During the tenure of President Angel "Gil" Fernandez, with his Secretary Loreto "Ton" Acharon, Rotary Year 1992-1993, with the Theme: "Real Happiness is Helping Others" the club reached another milestone in its history. On August 6, 1992, during the Governor's Ball, District Governor Xavier Ledesma requested President Gil Fernandez to organize another Rotary club. Director Zenn Zuzon was appointed Special Governor's Representative for that purpose. The rest of the year was utilized for that purpose as a club extension committee of the club planned and worked out the objective. By January 1993, the provisional club was already in existence with 20 members. Finally, the provisional club, with the sponsorship of RC Metro Dadiangas, was chartered as Club No. 29494, on May 28, 1993., and became officially the Rotary Club of Midtown General Santos.

R.Y. 1993-1994- President Mario "Mar" Dideles and Secretary Ramon "Mon" Licop, with Theme: "Believe in What You Do- Do What You Believe In."

R.Y. 1994-1995- President Francisco "Kiko" Lorenzo and Secretary Felix "Lix" Asoy, with Theme: "Be a Friend." This is the time that the club participated in the 5th National Inter-Metro Rotary Club Sportsfest which was held in Davao City.

R.Y. 1995-1996- President Emmanuel "Mawe" Ferolino and Secretary Dionisio "Diony" Callo. Rotary Theme: " Act with Integrity, Serve with Love, Work for Peace." The Rotary Community Corps at Sitio P.I. 16, Bgy. City Heights, General Santos City was organized. This was also the time that the idea for the creation of a club foundation to raise funds and to carry out benevolent worthwhile projects was formulated. The club participated in the 6th National Inter-Metro Rotary Club Sportsfest held in Manila, which was hosted by the Rotary Club of Metro San Francisco del Monte.

R.Y. 1996-1997- President Dionisio "Diony" Callo and Secretary Oscar "Oca" Sabado, with Rotary Theme: "Build the Future with Action and Vision" The "Metro Medium", the club's weekly bulletin, was adjudged "Outstanding Club Bulletin" for the said Rotary year. The 7th National Inter-Metro Rotary Club Sportsfest was held in Ozamis City, which was hosted by the Rotary Club of Metro Ozamis.

This was also the time that the draft of the Articles of Incorporation and the By-Laws of the proposed foundation was prepared by President-Elect Loreto "Ton" Acharon. The Articles of Incorporation and the By-Laws of "The Metro Dadiangas Rotary Club Foundation, Inc." was finally registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 22, 1996, at Davao City, Philippines. The first members of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation were PP Andres "Jun Lorenzo, PP Leopoldo "Pol" Durico, Treasurer Rodolfo "Rudy" Demontaño, Incumbent President Dionisio "Diony" Callo and PE Loreto "Ton" Acharon. The total amount of the initial contributions to the Foundation was P52,500.00.

R.Y. 1997-1998- President Loreto "Ton" Acharon and Secretary Waldemar "Waldy" Soguilon, with Theme: "Show Rotary Cares." The club was a co-host of the DISCON 1998, which was successfully held at the Family Country Hotel and Convention Center, Lagao, General Santos City. The participating club members also travelled to Angeles City to participate in the 8th National Inter-Metro Rotary Clubs Sportsfest hosted by the Rotary Club of Metro Angeles.

R.Y. 1998-1999- President Oscar "Oca" Sabado and Secretary Raul "Raul" Montes, with Theme: "Follow Your Rotary Dream." This was the first time that the club was adjudged as "Most Outstanding Club", President Oca as "The Most Outstanding Club President" and Secretary Raul Montes as "The Most Outstanding Secretary" in Zone 3A for the said Rotary Year. The Metro Medium was also adjudged as the "Outstanding Club Bulletin." The Rotaract Club of Holy Trinity College was organized. The "Pig Dispersal Project" conducted in the Rotary Community Corps at P.I. 16, Barangay City Heights, General Santos City was featured in the Rotary Magazine. The club participated in the 9th National Inter-Metro Rotary Club Sportsfest held in Bacolod City, which was hosted by the Rotary Club of Metro Bacolod.

R.Y. 1999-2000- President Rodolfo "Rudy" Demontaño and Secretary Rodolfo "Boy" Tiaga, with Theme: "Act With Consistency, Credibility and Continuity." The club successfully hosted the 10th National Inter-Metro Clubs Sportsfest, participated by several Metro clubs from all over the Philippines, which was held in the Provincial Capitol grounds at Alabel, Sarangani Province. The "Metro Medium" was again adjudged as the "Outstanding Club Bulletin" for the said Rotary year. The club was 100% pre-registered during the DISCON 2000 held at the Grand Men Seng Hotel, Davao City.

The application for the first matching grant of the club was submitted to Rotary International for approval. This was the proposed donation of a complete set of rondalla instruments to the Labangal National High School, Bgy. Labangal, General Santos City.

R.Y. 2000-2001-President Manuel "Manny" Mondero, with Secretary Efren "Fren" Sabado. Rotary Theme: "Create Awareness, Take Action" The club successfully hosted the 1st Presidential Cup Golf Tournament at the Sarangani Golf and Country Club, Pulatana, General Santos City. The organization of the Rotary Community Corps at Rancho MPC, at Malapatan, Sarangani Province was successfully undertaken. The Interact Club of the Notre Dame Boys High School was also organized. The club copped the 1st Runner-Up slot at the 11th National Inter-Metro Sportsfest in San Fernando, Pampanga, held last October 3-5, 2000. The Metro Medium was also adjudged as one of the three (3) "Outstanding Club Bulletins" in the District 3860- Mindanao area for the Rotary year, during the DISTAS 2001, which was held in Tagum City. The club received twelve (12) Distinguished Service Citation Awards.

The Rotary Year 2001-2002 with Rotary Theme: "Mankind is Our Business" was a great year for our club. Through the leadership of President Sylvan "Dondi" Silva, and the assistance of his Secretary Efren "Fren" Sabado and the other officers, dubbed as the "Regal Eagles", initiated and successfully completed sixteen (16) projects, and attendance in the PETS/DISTAS in Tagum and the DISCON 2002 in Davao City, for which the club was awarded eighteen (18) Distinguished Service Citation Awards. Likewise, the club also copped the 2nd Runner-up slot in the 12th National Inter-Metro Club Sportsfest held in Iloilo City last October 2-5, 2001.

The application for a matching grant was finally approved and granted. An amount of $4,000.00 were provided by the Rotary Club of Merrit Island, Florida, USA ($1,000.00), R.I. Funds ($ 1,000.00) and District Designated Funds from the Governor's Funds ($2,000) was released to the club for the rondalla project. The club bought rondalla instruments, a drum set, an electric organ and a complete set of uniforms for the Rondalla members of the Labangal National High School.
