All About Us
2nd U.S. Sharpshooters, Company B

Unit Information
The reactivated Company B, 2nd USSS was formed in the summer of 1995 by one man, Curtiss Pool.  Curtiss, a 20 year veteran of reenacting, (who remembers when the North wore levis, ("They're BLUE aren't they?!") and the south wore Sears work clothes ("Hey!  I'm in gray! And they'd worn them if they had them!") felt that one aspect of Michigan's contribution to the war was not be portrayed, that of the four companies of sharpshooters that the state sent to Hiram Berdan.  Curtiss was quickly joined by numerous members in the coming years. Some from other units, some brand new to reenacting, but all enthusiatic about what they were doing.  The company evolved into a very family oriented unit, with strong ties to it's civilian counterpart.  There are no "groups" withen the unit, as we are one big family.  Our roster now numbers 28 men, and over half a dozen women from all walks of life and who hail from states as far away as North Carolina and New York, and we have a large number of members from Ontario Canada, but the majority live in Michigan.  We pride ourselves on our proficiency at drill, (both line infantry and skirmisher,) and we are very proud of our officers and NCOs.  Anyone wishing to join can E-Mail or call either our Recruiters or leave a comment in our Guest Book. We will try our best to get you out on the field, (mostly free of charge,) so that you can see what reenacting with this company is like.  And if you like us and our people, then maybe you'll be our next new recruit!  So please feel free to drop any of us a line, and I hope to see ya on the field!
Mission
Civil War reenacting is an attempt to recreate the events and lifestyles of the men and women of the Civil War period, 1861-1865. The intent of the reenactors of Company B is to accurately portray the United States Sharpshooters during the Civil War. The time period we portray is set in July 1863. The   Sharpshooters served as skirmishers and snipers as opposed to regular line infantry.   They were clothed in a green frock coat and trousers, as a form of camouflage. Their purpose as skirmishers   was to disrupt the front line of the Confederate forces. To do this,   the Sharpshooters had to lie down, which is part of the reason they were armed with the   Sharps Rifle, as it allowed them to load, prime, and discharge their weapons   without exposing themselves to enemy fire. The Springfield, a rifled   musket, the standard Federal infantry firearm during the Civil War, usually   loaded in the upright or kneeling position. The Sharps rifle could also   be loaded and fired three times as fast as the Springfield, thus allowing   the Sharpshooters to keep a constant fire upon the enemy. As snipers the Sharpshooters   were used to kill enemy Artillerists and officers, in effect shutting   down the Artillery and lowering enemy morale.
