About the Author

Hi!

My name is Marsha Camblin and I live in Denver, Colorado. What inspired me to build this website? In 1999 I decided to teach myself HTML. So I needed to practice building a website and I selected Buddhism as a topic. Actually, initially the topic was to be Indigenous People - that's why I have the banner Red Dawn. Red Dawn was actually a name given to my by my Nakota teacher. Over time is has changed to an all Buddhist site so now I need to create a new banner (work in progress) reflecting this shift.

At the time I was just beginning to learn much more about Tibetan Buddhism which had fascinated me for years. I was raised Episcopalian and no one in my family or group of friends was a Buddhist. But, I always had a profound respect for the Dalai Lama. Perhaps it was a past life thing.

Then the drummer where I did Dances of Universal Peace, Gregory Long, started offering meditation training and I started on the path. Gregory practiced Shambhala meditation in the tradition of Trungpa Rinpoche.

One of the first books I read about Buddhism was written by a woman named Tsultrim Alione and was titled Women of Wisdom. I loved this book and later discovered that she actually lives in Pagosa Springs, Colorado where she has a retreat center called Tara Mandala.

In June of 2000 I was blessed to study the Lam Rim with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Los Angeles. The teachings were entitled Atisha's Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment. At the end of the teaching he gave us all the White Tara empowerment. I wanted the Dalai Lama for a root teacher, but found out that he has such a huge following that he does not take many personal students. So my search for my personal teacher began.

I started reading everything I could find on Buddhism. For some reason even though I had a wonderful experience at the Great Stupa of Darmakaya in Red Feathers Lake, Colorado, I was not very attracted to the Shambhala tradition. That would have been much too easy as there are an abundance of teachings in this tradition in Colorado since Trungpa Rinpoche had started Naropa Institute in Boulder.

My mother died shortly after I returned from Los Angeles in October of 2000. After mom died I was in a car accident in which I broke my ACL in my knee. This lead to a year long of surgery and physical therapy. I was not able to start work at a new job because after the accident I needed to go to physical therapy three days a week for a year. No new employer was likely to give me that much time off of work!

This was pretty much a forced retreat. So I spent my days reading everything I could get my hands on about Tibetan Buddhism. I realized that there were likely to be many people in the world with an interest in Buddhism who would like to learn the basics. So for each new thing I learned I developed a page on my website so that others could learn as well.

When the Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, escaped from China in January of 2000 I was so excited that I decided to report about this wonderful news on the very first page I created on this website.

In the beginning I intended the site to be about all indigenous people. I had studied with a Nakota man for many years and have a great deal of respect for all indigenous people. I actually named the website Red Dawn because I received the name Red Dawn from the man who gave me my pipe, Grey Owl. The Nakota words for Red Dawn are Anpao Duta. Over time the site just became more and more focused on Buddhism. I need to rename it one of these days and create a banner that reflects the Buddhist focus of the site better. Being a webmaster is an ongoing process which requires constant updating of the site.

Later I began to offer a newsletter, which at first was called Ziji, but was later renamed the Peace and Loving Kindness News. Then when I became aware of blogging in 2005, I started a blog called the Wisdom Loving Mother. The name originated from my primary Buddhist practice of Sherab Chamma or Wisdom Loving Mother.

My Buddhist studies have included taking refuge from Thrangu Rinpoche in Crestone, Colorado. Thrangu Rinpoche is the tutor of the Karmapa and is of the Kagyu lineage.

Right after I returned from the Lam Rim teachings I visited Tara Mandala and received the 'Three Words That Strike at the Heart' from Lama Wangdor. This was a major turning point for me. Although I have not seen Lama Wangdor again, I am very grateful for having received this pointing out!

During that year of reading one book that profoundly effected me was Beyond the Sky and the Earth by Jamie Zeppa. This was when I determined that I wanted to travel to Bhutan. It took several years, after my recovery, but I finally did achieve this dream and visited Bhutan. I was there during Losar (Tibetan New Year) of 2005. What a dream come true! Some day I hope to go back. The highlight of the trip was visiting the Tiger's Nest, the cave of Padmasambava also known as Taksang.

In 2001 I received the Nyinghma ngondro in the Pemalingpa lineage from Gangteng Rinpoche. Then I took several dzogchen teachings from Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche from the Yungdrung Bon tradition.

I received the Kalachakra initiation in May, 2004 in Toronto, Canada from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In November 2004 I received the A-Krid ngondro from His Holiness Menri Trizin Lungtok Tenpai Nyima at Headlands Institute in Sausalito, CA.

There have been various other lamas and teachings along the way. In 2005 I visited Bhutan and also Nepal. While in Kathmandu I was introduced to Lopon Tenzin Namdak. And I attended his 80th birthday celebration.

As I said I taught myself HTML and have always done my programming the hard way by hand. But one of the most helpful things I did early on was to purchase an ebook called How to Make Your Site Sell. I remember it was worth much more than I paid for this wonderful resource. It was a goldmine of information. It gave me many invaluable ideas and pointers about being a webmaster.

So if you want to create a website the hard way, do what I did and learn to program "from stratch". But if you are smarter than I was you should have a look at the Free Trial of Site Sell - you will be glad you did! It makes producing a website a breeze with many top shelf ideas and pointers.

SBI Video Tour!

The reason I created this page was to educate the public in some of the basics of Tibetan Buddhism. I noticed that most of the websites only told you a little about a particular lama and what events were upcoming.

I saw a need to offer people some information in one place which took me a long time to pull together from various places. I do not set myself up as a "teacher", because you really need to find a root lama to study with and to receive empowerments in a particular lineage. But I still saw a need for information on-line for students doing research on Buddhism to get some of the basics. So that is what I try to offer here. I hope you enjoy it!

I developed this website initially during a year when I was stuck at home because of an injury from a car accident. But there are many other reasons to start a website such as retirement. Retirement doesn't have to mean boredom, inactivity, and lower income. It really means freedom to try something new, explore new challenges, and earn a nice income in the process! SBI! has turned so many lives from unemployed despair to happy independence. Some of you may be caring for an ill or disabled child, spouse or parent. A Web site affords you the luxury of being at home with the person you love, looking after him or her in a familiar, comfortable environment. You should really look at this resource. You will be glad you found out about this! I wouldn't recommend it if I didn't know it will work for you. My advice is to do what I did and pick a topic that you have a personal interest in. Be sure it is one your are fired up about.

Thanks for visiting my site. Please send your friends.

If you have questions about Site Sell they will be happy to answer all of your questions here.

Have a look at some case studies. For example see the one of a Work At Home Mom named Michelle Schill, a mother from Alberta, Canada, who got tired of customers coming into her "in-home hair salon." Despite the good money, she turned to the Net and found SBI!. Any mom can do the same...
