Chris C. Writes:A little history on me: I am a third generation of former AMC Kenosha employees. I was my Fathers department that did all the chassis design on the Javelin/AMX, Scrambler and Machine and we drove the test mules in the experimental fleet. I worked with the guys that set up the plant for those cars. If I was real good, my Father would let me drive the experimental cars as he always drove one of the fleet of about 40 cars home at night and weekends. Wow. What an interesting place for a car nut kid to work. Looking back on it, I probably should have paid them to be there as I didn't think I really earned my keep. With an unrestricted pass for total access to the entire company I went everywhere, classified, restricted areas, you name it. And we had the local cops chasing all the parts runners as they drove those Scrambler and Machine mules around town. Those guys would drive out of the engineering lot on a mission to fetch something from the local dealers and would drive real nice for about two blocks to get away from the plant. Then put the hammer down. For some reason that seemed to be where the police were waiting. The Scramblers and later Machines were finished in the body shop on the production line and engineers would follow it down the final assembly line and then to the experimental garage. Machine bodies came from Milwaukee where they were welded together painted and had the glass, trim and the interior less front seats and I panel installed. The Machine was then trucked to Kenosha where it went down the West line for the running gear, the rest of the interior, grill and bumpers. _________________________________________________________________________________ The following exterior colors have been added to the 1970 American Motors Line: B6 Electric Blue Poly P8 Shadow Black Note: Presently the Electric Blue Poly 2244 will be used on the hood and as a strip around the base of the new sports car- the Hornet. The Black is an accent color Ditzler /AM Bulletin September 1969 _________________________________________________________________________________ American Motors set out to build a "Super Muscle Car," as Bill Sanders wrote in Nov. '69. Coming on the heels of the popular Rambler Scrambler, the Rebel Machine seemed to work despite the odd name. Sanders said, "For a price below $3500, the Machine performs like a champ, both in straight-out acceleration and excellent handling." Motor Trend November 1969 _________________________________________________________________________________ An early proposal within the AMC workings featured the Hornet as the subject of a nearly identical undertaking. The Hornet would've been the wiser choice, but the Rebel got the strongest vote. Someday, if things don't go right, impeachment proceedings may be instituted. -Hot Rod February 1970 _______________________________________________________________________ The first 100 cars were delivered from Kenosha finished in white. Hurst Performance Products then did the lower belt line stripes and hood up in blue, then added the red stripes on the upper body sides. At the rear, red, white and blue stripes ran across the fender tips and deck.
