Christine has left and Erikcontemplates the futility of his existence. Meg is instructed by Christine via letter to find Erik and deliver a message to him. Bolstering her courage, Meg does so and is "rescued" by the ghost himself in the process. Meg and Erik have become friends and, despite some misgivings on both sides, Meg invites Erik to her flat for dinner and he accepts. Erik forgoes his usual instruction of Meg in favor of teaching her non-ballet dances. The two of them suffer the requisite yearnings of body and heart. Meg is pursued and courted by the new lead dancer, Jean-Paul Delacroix. Delacroix persuades Meg and Jammes to dinner and Erik follows in time to overhear his less-than-cordial plans. Delacroix tries to rape a drugged Meg and Erik reacts accordingly, killing the dancer. Certan that his violence has frightened Meg, Erik deposits her home and leaves. Meg dreams of Erik commiting suicide and is moved to go find him. They meet in the caverns under the Opera and Meg finally finds the courage to do what she has wanted to since meeting the Phantom. Erik tries to convince Meg that he is an inappropriate subject for love... she is far from convinced, naturally. Erik takes Meg back to his house and the two have their own inner dialogues of confusion, doubt, and hope. Erik tells Meg of his past with no holds barred and is surprised when she still admits to loving him. Meg and Erik make love, much to the reader's relief, I'm sure. :) The morning after, Meg and Erik spend their time cuddling, unaware of conspiracies against them going on above. An inspecteur named Vertier enters the scene, determined to unravvle the riddle of the Phantom of the Opera. Vertier reflects on an event in his past... one that may make him more likely to be Erik's ally, rather than foe... but which route will her take?
