NORTHERN CREE SINGERS

The Northern Cree Singers of Alberta are one of the top pow-wow groups in North America. They began as a drum group in 1980 when Steve Wood and his brothers traveled to Lapwai, Idaho to compete in a stick game tournament. The first night there they lost all their money and could not get home. The only way they could earn money was to sing at the pow-wow (the Woods had learned songs from their father and uncles who were singers in their younger days). One of the brothers borrowed a drum from a local museum so they could sing at the pow-wow. When the director asked the name of their group, they looked down at the faded words, "Northern Cree," on the drum and gave that to him as their drum name. Thus, the Northern Cree Singers began their career as one of the most popular drum groups on the pow-wow trail.

Northern Cree has contributed music to the CBC for a documentary on the Healing Center, to the Alberta Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission for a documentary and currently provides music for the Muskwachees Dance Theater of Hobbema which will tour Europe and Australia the fall of 1999. In 1998, Northern Cree provided music and appeared onscreen in the major theatrical film, "Grey Owl".

Northern Cree has recorded fourteen albums which are distributed worldwide by Canyon Records of Phoenix, Arizona. Their eighth album, "Recorded Live at Lummi" , was nominated for a Juno Award in 1996 and was a finalist for "Best Native North American Album" by the Association for Independent Music (AFIM). Their ninth album, "Dance Hard", was a finalist for "Pow-Wow Album of the Year" at the first Native American Music Awards in 1998. Their twelfth album, "It's Time To Round Dance", was nominated for "Best Pow-Wow Recording" at the second Native American Music Awards in 1999. T
