This site brought back a lot of memories. I was onboard from Feb 1968 until April 1969. I remember all three times the ship was hit. The recoiless hits were the first. I was manning the port side .50 caliber when were were hit by RPG and small arm fire, D cember 1968 I believe; I couldn't hear very well for about three days after firing that .50. I was also one of the six crew members that were in the mess decks when we were hit by the 122mm rocket. I was going up the starboard ladder and was on the third r fourth step when it went off. I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I have a number of pictures I plan on submitting to the site, and I look forward to the planned reunion. I also welcome email from any of my former shipmates.

How come no one put the TGC motto in print? "When the going got tough, Tough Tom got going." An unbelievable ship and crew, helped me solve my decision to make the Navy a career, still serving proudly as an LDO. Glad to see so many Sailors still intereste in the 1159.

I was a crew member on the Washtenaw County, LST 1166 when a crew member of the Tom Green shot and japanese police officer (with the officers own gun) in Yokosuka in either 1962 or 63. I met that individual in the base brig shortly after he recovered from the wounds the hard hat shore patrol inflicted on him when they shot him down of the fence to the base. I'm curious as to what happened to that crew member. Rumor had it that he was given to the Japanese who later beheaded him, but I'm a bit doubtful of the beheading.

Arrived on board at Chu Lai, Vietnam. Stayed an exciting 1 year tour. There was a good crew on board. I always consider the Tom Green as one of the better ships that I was stationed on. I decided to get out of the Navy in 1971 after almost 14 years (too m ny Z-Grams I think). I hadn't thought much about that era of my life, until a couple days ago I ran across another ship's web page. So I decided to look up some of my old ships and ran across this site. This one is one of the best I might add. It bring b ck a lot of good memories. Thanks.

What a wonderful web site! I never thought the "Old Tom" would ever have a Web site! Marvin you did a suberb job in setting up this site! It brought back a lot of memories that were forgotten about for so many years. I was on board when we were hit with 2 rounds of fire in the Mekong River. We were the support ship for the "riverrine" patrols (RIVRON 9). The good news was they never hit the Beer locker! If they did, the war would have been over the next day! I also remember crossing the Equator and get ing iniated into the World of King Neptune.

I am very pleased to be in contact with some of my former shipmates. I was able to find this through Ed Lange. During my stay in Tom Green County, we made several trips from Yokosuka to Vietnam and up to Okinawa. There were several mishaps on our trips to Okinawa. One trip, we were loaded with Marines and they were using the tanks that was supposed to go in water s well as on land. This one trip, there was about 4 or 5 of them that drove off the ramp and went down and never came up. Another time, we were in rough waters and one of the bulldozers that was in the tank deck broke loose. One of the Marines went down to try and secure it, but it cought him in the middle and cut him half into. Not a pretty sight. Will try for some more later. I thank the members that have worked so hard to put this in place.

Hello shipmates! It's been a long time since we've talked! I was CO when we got hit the first time and was XO under "Dilly Dally" and then under the best CO I've ever served under, Mick Riedemann. We had great times and "scared as hell" times. The Tom Gre n was a great ship and I read that She is still serving with the Spanish Navy. Remember "crossing the line" before going into Singapore and spending all of our combat pay in nearly one evening. The Chiefs came to Mick and me and asked if we could get unde way and go back to Nam as it was too expensive there. Lots of great memories! E-mail me and I'll respond. Roger Phillips

This is a very touching site. My Dad (Will Howes) was aboard and I recognized the names of some of the places in the pictures. I remember as a child looking at his Navy photographs that he kept in a big box. My sisters and I loved to look at the handso e sailors looking back at us from the pictures taken on deck. Thanks for your great work with this site! My father will be over in a few days to see the site for himself...hopefully he'll sign the guestbook also.

I enjoyed being in the Navy and all the good times aboard ship. One of the things I think about a lot was the initial landing of our troops at Chu Lai and that I was a part of it. Our ship made many ports of call while I was aboard. We were in Hong Kong, any times, Bankok, Taiwan, Sasebo, Phillipines were other cities and countries visited. I am a member of the US LST Association and our state organization. I am trying to get some interest going in a Tom Green County reunion, first with the sailors that a e close to Minnesota, and then with the ones further away. I'm hoping to see some former shipmates when I go to the National Meeting in San Diego in August.

We have not had the privilege of serving in the armed forces, but I want to deeply extend my appreication and heartfelt thanks to all of you who have so honorably and courageously placed your lives in jeopardy to defend our Country and our liberties. Wit out your sacrifice the world would be in the hands of tyrants and we would not enjoy the freedoms we cherish today. This is a great page. I have enjoyed looking at it. It brings back many memories. When I was on board, she was homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. We had our dependents there. I was on board when we operated out of Okinawa and during one of the practice with the Marines, we had a bulldozer to break loose in the tank deck. In an effort to co trol the machine, one of the Marines was caught in front and was cut into. We also lost about 4 or 5 tanks during that practice. They were the type that was supposed to go in the water as well as on land. They went off of the tank ramp, but did not come ack to the surface. I do not recall wheather they were recovered or not. Good Luck and Good Health to all of my comrades.
