When they arrived at the restaurant no one was speaking to one another so the dinner conversation was sparse. As they got up to leave, Paula tried to pay for the bill, but Bill would not have this. “Just what do you think you are doin’?” asked Bill. “ I am paying for lunch because we all know that ever since you lost your job you are struggling to pay for anything,” said Paula. “Well, I can sure as heck pay for my own meals!” “Fine, have it your way.” She stormed out of the restaurant and got into the car beside Kat. The kids were playing in the back seat and kicking the backs of the seats. As Bill came out to the car, he slowly climbed into the back seat with the children. And when they arrived home, the situation became worse. “How long do you plan on staying in town, Mom?” asked Kat. “Well, if it is okay with you, dear, I would like to stay here,” answered Paula. “I don’t mind, Mom. Bill, can my mother stay here for a couple of nights?” “If she stays here, then I am leaving!” shouted Bill. “Fine, then leave, just go! I will not turn my back on my own mother!” retorted Kat. “I’ll get my things and stay in a motel then! I’ll be back when she is gone!” Sunday morning, Bill returned home and apologized to his wife. Paula was still rude towards him, but they would soon be having a talk abut that. “Could I please talk to both of you in the living room?” asked Kat. “Sure,” replied Bill. “Why not?” answered Paula. “First of all, I want to let both of you know that you are very special to me. I love both of you equally, but you have to start getting along. Otherwise we will never be able to spend time together, and I will be forced to choose between the both of you. Mom, you have to stop criticizing Bill. And Bill, you have to stop being so hard on my mom,” stated Katherine. “Okay,” said bill. “I will try.” “Me too. You should have told us this a long time ago.” And now they all get along better. They still fight and argue, but when it is over they still have each other. |
