All because of a dragon? Half the town gone and the town surviving on selling abandoned houses? Sir Daniel concluded that the dragon had to be large, but how large? Sir Daniel didn’t notice any burn marks caused by usual dragon havoc, but he figured that any scorched housed had been torn apart already and sold with whatever could be sold. He would have to wait until the night of the trap to find out how large it really was.
“Umpf!” Sir Daniel tripped and fell into a large crater in the road. If there was one thing the town couldn’t’ afford to fix, it was obviously the roads. When Sir Daniel looked around, he saw that there were many craters just like the one he fell in.
Sir Daniel checked in at the Hunters’ Lodge near the main square. It was an average size lodge with small rooms made for short stays.
After Sir Daniel changed into his night clothing he made his way to the rooftop. The night sky shone brightly on the small little town. A shadow was passing over the town, probably a small cloud passing between the moon and the ground. As he looked closer, he saw that it was moving much too fast to be a cloud. Just as the shadow was crossing over him, Sir Daniel looked up. Suddenly he was knocked to the ground by a huge gust of wind. When he got up to his feet he saw nothing in the sky. Just the stars, black sky, and the moon…
The next morning Sir Daniel got up and went to the bar. Waitresses wandered around the room serving breakfast. Sir Daniel ordered a slab of ham with broiled eggs, bacon, and orange juice. A while later, George and Bob came in.
“The dragon strikes again!” George announced to anyone willing to listen.
“No kidding, who this time?” Sir Daniel joined in on the townsfolk chat.
Seeing that they had an audience George and Bob wandered over to Sir Daniel. Bob sat down and started to reach for Sir Daniel’s ham, but Sir Daniel swung his fork over and slammed it down on the table near Bob’s hand. Bob’s hand retreated and George gave Bob a hopeless look. “Hi,” George said. “It was just some old guy down at Seventh and Alps.”
“Yeah, some homeless bum,” Bob added. “Didn’t have the strength to get away from it.”
“Oh. I walked by there yesterday,” Sir Daniel stated. “Wait! What did he look like?!” When they explained his features, Sir Daniel’s suspicions were concluded. “That was the man I talked to yesterday!”
“Well, that won’t happen no more,” George said comfortingly. “We’re gonna get that monster tonight!”
“Speaking of the trap,” Bob added, “it’s almost finished.” Sir Daniel, Bob, and George wandered out of the bar and out onto the main square. The trap was an interesting contraption. Dugouts lined the sides where archers were to fire arrows at the dragon. Down the streets were catapults hidden from the dragon providing it didn’t enter the square from that angle. On the rooftops archers would launch weighty arrows carrying nets. The archers would try to fire the arrows simultaneously across the square to trap the dragon. All was prepared for the night. The only problem would be getting the dragon to land in the square.
That night Sir Daniel sat atop the Hunters’ Lodge where he had a perfect view of the dragon trap. The town “mayor”, who is the only the assistant mayor while the other mayor is “on vacation”, invited all the people of Legodas to come see the dragon defeated. They were to circle around the square. Everything was prepared although Sir Daniel still didn’t know how they were going to get the dragon in the square. Fire lanterns illuminated the square directing the dragon there. |
