Domestic Violence:

Redistributing the Power

Redistributing The Power is dedicated to survivors of relationship abuse and domestic violence who are, or will be, on the path towards healing.

Not all abuse is caused by men in heterosexual relationships. Unfortunately, many women abuse men and same gender abuse occurs in gay and lesbian relationships. However, abuse by men against women is the most common form. Consequently, this web site is written for women who have been abused by men. This in no way minimizes the horror of abuse in other partnership configurations.

Please note: If you are in Canada, and in need of immediate crisis intervention, counseling, and/or referrals to local sources of assistance, you should contact the National 24-Hour Domestic Violence Hotline, Quebec, Canada: 1-800-363-9010. In the United State of America: 1-800-799-SAFE (7283), TDD is 1-800-787-3224. If you are outside of North America, please contact your local women's shelter, women's centre, distress centre, or other emergency resources.

For those who have never experienced an abusive or violent relationship, we often believe once she finds her way out , a victim's difficulties are solved; her life is good, she is safe, and her recovery will be swift. But as survivors, we know leaving is not the end of the nightmare. It is the beginning of a difficult, yet fulfilling and rewarding journey towards healing and happiness. We caution you that you may feel more depressed, anxious, or angry as you read this site, and you may question your control over your emotions resulting from your experience of abuse. You may want to seek professional counseling to help you take full advantage of your healing process and to move forward in your life.

Each wheel contains a testimony from a survivor of relationship or domestic violence. However, the names have been changed to ensure confidentiality and protect identities of the women concerned.

Whether you are being abused, a survivor, an abuser, or an outside spectator, domestic and relationship violence affects each one of us directly or indirectly. We welcome you to use our web site as a guide to understand violence, trace its cause and to end it. We must come together - women and men - and make a final stance on equality and against all violence. It is vital that we redistribute the power to form equality between sexes, and eradicate domestic and relationship violence from our society.
