Red Raider Sports Report
                               for 12-31-00
It's time to say goodbye to 2000 with the final column of the old year.  Like most of the east coast, I've been digging myself out of a pig pile of snow, some of our teams took a hint though, and 3 of the 4 winter teams I cover were on winter trips.

The
Mens Basketball team planned thier schedule best, they were in Florida for a two day tournament, they didn't win a game, but at least they were warm, right?  Foul trouble killed them, and the first game was a total loss, with the 5 starters racking up just 26 points.  Colgate fared a little bit better in the second game, but ran out of gas, and players, in the end.  We have one more non conference game against Cornell, before starting up with the Patriot League.

The
Womens Basketball team is embarking on a tough west coast road trip, meeting Eastern Washington today and Gonzaga later in the week.  The Red Raider's need to get thier intensity back from last year if they want to be competitive in the league, and I think they can be once they get things going again.  Let's see if we show any signs of that on this trip.

The
Men's Hockey team is back!!  It's time to talk hockey again, and the Red Raider's continue to show promise, if not a winning record, or even a win.  We took last at the Silverado Shootout, with a loss and a tie.  We only allowed 2 goals each game though, and really cut down on the penalties.   Sturgis and O'Malley are back from injuries, Sturgis scoring the game tying goal the game against Minnesota-DuluthKevin Johns is almost back, Coach Vaughan opted to rest him for at least another week, since he wants him 100% for when we return to ECAC action.  We have a home game next weekend, against Mercyhurst.  This year 10 of our 12 non conference games have been on the road.  Thats rough on any team, and with Colgate's home ice advantage, that's really taking it's toll on our record.  The Coach has talked about how it's hard to get teams to travel into Starr rink, but we really should try to do that, even if it means scheduling more MAAC opponents.

The
Womens Hockey team was introduced to it's future league this weekend.  They took on 11 in the Nation, Niagara, yesterday.   As can be expected, we took the loss 6-0.  I was hoping for at least 1 or 2 goals though.  Next years going to be rough, but that's expected.  We will have another recruiting class for Ted Wisner to work with.  And we have many excellent underclassmen who are only going to get better.   They have league games for the rest of the season, and havea few hurdles to clear before making a run at the league title.

After taking some time off from hockey, it's time to throw ourselves right back into coverage, so first, here's a quick look at some of last years class, still making waves.  Here's what one 16 year old Greenville Grrrrowl fan had to say about one former Red Raider, "Hey, is anyone else just in love with out new goalie, Shep Harder?  I mean, really.  This guy is worth keeping!  He's injured but his finger is healing and he says he'll be in the January (December?) 29 game.  And if his goal tending wasn't enough, he's ultra-sweet and very nice!! He's just good all over :-)" That Shep, always a fan favorite.
Andy McDonald is back in Anaheim, this is his third trip to the big show.

Looking to the future, I talked with
Bill Brown, Heah Coach of  the Owen Sound Grays, the minor league team that we signed Adam Mitchell and Darryl Mckinnon from.  The team is right at the top of the league.  Mitchell leads the teams in goals and points. He's top ten in the league right now.  He's played some defense to fill in for some injuries the team has had.  He's linemates with McKinnon normally, and Darryl has been doing very well at center, but he missed some games due to injury.   He thinks the game very well, and these two have been playing together for many years, and thier cpach is confident that they can contribute starting with thier first game.  Several members of that team has travelled from Ontario to see a game at Colgate.  Sounds like we're building a realtionship with the Canadain Juniors that SLU and Clarkson are famous for.   There's even a chance we get thier goalie, who is the best in the league right now.   Not bad!  As far as our other recruit, Richard Hodgkinson, goes, it's been hard to find info on him.  He's a big defensemen, he was described by USCHO as "lanky", he seems to have a good number of assists, and how about this for dedication to finding the info, I talked to his girl friends friend the other day.  Who said that he was "a really good player"

Site updates will continue over break.  We got a new fanpoll on its way, articles and team updates are also in the works.  And of course, the monthy report will be out sometime tomorrow.   Until then, this has been 2000, thanks for visiting the Red Raider Sports fan site, and Happy New Year!
