Mens Basketball
Adonal Foyle class of 97'
This 6'10'', 250 lb. center led Colgate to countless victories between 1994 and 1997.  His Junior season at Colgate, he was third in the nation in scoring, second in the nation in rebounding, and led the nation in blocked shots.  He was the first freshman ever named to the first team All-Patriot League.  Adonal also recieved the Patriot League Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.  Collegiate Career highs include 37 points in a game, and 18 rebounds in a game.  Adonal also holds the NCAA record for Career Blocked Shots, with 492, breaking the record that was held by Alonzo Mourning.
Adonal was an early entry candidate to the 1997 NBA Draft, foregoing his senior year.  He was picked #8 overall by the Golden State Warriors.  In his time with Golden State, Adonal has established himself as one of the leading defensive players in the NBA, and was recently rewarded with a new4-year contract..

The Colgate record book contain's many interesting statistics from Colgate mens basketball's rich history, which began in the year 1900.  That first season saw Colgate earn a 5-8 record against such opponents as Vermont, Hamilton, Potsdam, Williams, and Dartmouth.  Colgate has had 19 head coaches during that time, the most successful being William Reid, who coached 9 seasons between 1919 and 1928, and has now given his name to Reid Athletic center.  Under Reid, Colgate won 133 games and was highlighted by a 17-3 season in 26-27.  Here's a look at some of Colgate's biggest record holders...

Tucker Neale 95'- All time career scoring leader with 2,075 points, thats almost 300 points higher than the number 2 man.  He averaged 23.9 points a game, earning a high of 26.6 ppg his junior year.  He's second on the all time 3 point field goals list with 248, good for 40%, another second place record.  He ranked 6th on the all time assists list with 234.

Mike Ferrara 81'-  Third on Colgate's all time scoring list with 1,763 points.  In 1981 he was ranked second in the nation with 28.6 ppg.  He's Colgate's second all time leader in free throw percentage, with 82% made.  Ferrara also proved valuble on defense, with 154 steals in his career, enough to be 4th on that list.

Adonal Foyle 97'- While his defensive skills are what got him into the pro's, he was also outstanding on offense.  In three years he made second on Colgate's all time scoring list.  He's also second on the all time list for shooting percentage.  12.7 rebounds per game places him second on the all time list.  His career record for blocks is an all time NCAA record, he literally owns every blocked shot record in the Colgate book.

Colgate's history also yields some legends.  Ernie Vandeweghe was named an All-American in 1949.  He is still 7th on Colgate's list for points points per game with 19.2 ppg.

And now, here are your quick records and facts.

Teams we've beaten the most
Rochester (64)
Cornell (47)
Syracuse (45)

In 1992, in a game against Brooklyn, Jonathan Stone scored 52 points, a Colgate record.

Tucker Neale put together a string of 21 consecutive 30 point plus games.

The biggest win ever? Colgate 90, Alfred 12, in 1922.  But if you want a truly impressive offensive performance, look to the Red Raiders 122 points it scored against both Hobart and Bowdoin.

1995 and 1996 were the only two years Colgate won the Patriot League and advanced to the NCAA tournament, they lost good games to Kansas and UConn.

Women's Basketball

Colgate womens basketball began it's tradition in 1973 under the direction of head coach Ruth Goehring.   The Red Raider's exprienced their ups and downs, earning thier highest winning percentage in 80-81, where they went 19-6.  The transition to D1 was made, and the Colgate tradition contnues to roll being led by Coach Rohn.  Here's a look at Colgate's elite

Suzanne Bowen '91- She leads the all time scoring list with a whooping 2,016 points!  Her other accomplishments include..18.7 career ppg, 8.8 rebounds per game, 75 blocked shots,  215 steals and a shooting percentage of .564, all of these are in the top 5 for the team.

Sarah Cashman '83- Second in career points with 1,666, all time steals leader with 262 and  made 74% of her free throws.

Lisa Glading '84- Led Colgate in rebounds with 1,119 in her career while averaging 14 ppg.

Let's hit you with the quick stats now...

Our worst record is against Holy Cross, we have only beaten them once in 22 tries.

Colgate has broken the 100 points in a game barrier when they scored 106 against Canisus in 1997.

The only thing negative about that previous record, is that we did not win that game, Canisus did with thier 114 points.

Field Hockey
Ruth Goehring, of women's basketball fame, was Colgate's first field hockey coach.  The team began play in 1973 with a 6-3 record in that first season.  Colgate field hockey has an overall winning record of 238-195-22 over it's 27 seasons.  The best season was '75, when the Red Raiders went 14-3.

Here are some of the players that led the field hockey team to its winning record:
Lynne Wertz '80-Colgate's career leader in goals with 44, as well as the all-time points leader with 83.  In 1979, Wertz set Colgate records with season highs of 16 goals and 32 points

Christine Hanrahan '88-She is third in Colgate career GAA with 1.58.  First in Save Pct. with .879, and all-time leader in saves with 733 and shutouts with 14.

Here are some quick stats and records for the field hockey team:

The team allowed less than 1 goal per game in the '85 season.

Colgate has been picked to tie with Fairfield University for the Patriot League title this season.  Prior to last season's OT loss, Colgate had won 10 in a row against Fairfield.

Colgate finished second in the AIAW Nationals in 1979.

Colgate finished first in the Patriot League in 1996 for its first league title.

Now, in the year 2000, head coach Cathy Foto begins her 12th season in charge of the Red Raiders, and has dedicated herself to the team more than ever.

Football
Colgate has sent 58 players to the NFL or the first American Football League before that.   Colgate's football tradition is absolutly amazing,  prepare to read about records, great players, traditions and just about anything else you could want to know from Colgate 110 year football history.

Kenny Gamble '88- This running back has assaulted the Colgate and even NCAA record book.  The second floor of Huntington Gymnasium has a lounge dedicated to him.   He gained over 100 yards in 29 different games throughout his career, a Div 1-AA record.  Other division records include.. 3 seasons rushing for over 1000 yards, 55 rushing touchdowns in his career and finally his 7,623 rushing and recieving yards still stands as a NCAA Div 1-AA record.  He averaged almost 5.5 yards per carry during his career.  In 1985, he broke open for a 91 yard run against Dartmouth.  Gamble spent 3 years with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mike Powers '84-  Mike made an impact in the very first game of his career.  He made 5 field goals against Army to set an NCAA record for most field goals in a game for a freshman, and most in the first game of a career.  He kept up this high level of performance for his  years at Colgate.  He made 35 field goals during his career, a Colgate record.  Making 64% of them during his career was also a record.   In 1986, he connected on 8 in a row, he also made 10 field goals that were at least 40 yards, all Colgate records.  He added 117 extra points out of 137 attempts.

Ryan Vena '00- Vena earned his spot as one of the greatest QB's in Colgate history just this past year, when he finished his great career.  His Colgate records he broke include.. passing for an average of 9.06 yards per attempt during his career and averaging 15.4 yards per completion.  During his career he tossed up 61 touchdown passes, including a streak of 29 games where he made at least 1 touchdown pass.  7.4% of the time he passed, the play ended in a TD for Colgate.  Vena was also a prolific scrambler, in all of his seasons, he rushed for at least 300 yards, including over 700 yards his junior year.  Vena has moved on to the IFL to ocntinue his football career.

Dave Goodwin '91-  Goodwin set Colgate records for completing 34 passes in one game, 256 during his senior year, that year he threw for 3,352 yards.  9 times in his career, he passed for over 300 yards in one game, including two games in a row where he would throw for over 400 yards.

Corey Hill '99- Time to spotlight some recievers, Hill set records when he caught 14 passes in one game, 71 in a season and 212 in his career.   That's yardages of 274, 1,287 and 3,434, all records.   During his career, he made a total of 34 touchdown catches.  And finally, he made at least one reception in 42 consecutive games.

Tom Stenglein '86- Tom made the record books by having 13 100 yard plus games as a wide reciever during his career.  During his career, he averaged 17.6 yards per reception and averaged almost 1 touchdown evrey game.

Tom Wilson '67-  Special kudos for setting records in two different catergories and have both of them stand the test of time.  First, pass interceptions.  Wilson snagged 8 in 1966 and 20 during his days in the Chenango Valley.   Secondly, he proved himself as Colgate's greatest punt return man.  He holds the records for yards in a game, season and career with 128, 313 and 717 yards.  He even managed 2 returns for a TD.

Randall Jospeh '01- Randall has allready made his mark on Colgate, and he's not even done yet.  His foot speed and ability to ward of tackles made him fun to watch, and devestating to opponents.  He currently finds himself in 7th on Colgate's all time rushing lsit before his final season for Colgate.  Last year he had the third greatest rushing season ever for Colgate, and this while missing a game and a half.   In that one half game, he scored 4 touch downs, the record being 5, and ran for 258 yards, that amount being just 7 yards shy of the single game rushing record.

Unfortunatly, the record books do not do the defensive players justice.  Any information on who you think are the greatest defensemen and lineman are will be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps Colgate's greatest claim to fame is the 1932 season.  The phrase "Undefeated, untied, unscored upon and uninvited" stems from that memorable year.  Colgate blanked 9 teams that year under the coaching of Andy Kerr, the teams beated were: St. Lawrence, Case Tech, Niagara, Lafayette, N.Y.U.,  Penn State, Mississippi A&M, Syracuse and Brown.  Colgate was not invited to a bowl game.  This was also the year Colgate first took the nickname "The Red Raiders"

In 1996, Colgate made history again.  They became just the third team in Div 1 A or AA history to have a winning record the season after not winning at all.  In 1995 Colgate lost all 11 games.  The next season, Dick Biddle stepped in as head coach, and in his first year, led Colgate to a 6-5 record.  The next season, Colgate advanced to the NCAA playoffs, and has every year since.

And now, facts blitz!

Most yards in a game - 678, vs Lehigh in 1997

Most ridiculous score? Colgate 107, RPI, 0   This feat was accomplised in 1915.

In 1952, Bucknell managed just 19 yards against the Red Raiders.

In 1999, Colgate set a record by averaging 37.9 points per game.

The longest field goal is 52 yards, made against Syracuse in 1916.

John Paske intercepted a pass from Lehigh and ran it back 88 yards in 1964, it is Colgate's longest interception return not for a touchdown.

Daniel Fortmann, an offensive guard in the 30's went on to a 7 year career with the Chicago Bears, he was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame!!!

Three former Colgate players have made it to the big game in the NFL.  Mark van Eeghen did it with the Oakland Raider's in 1977 and 1981, Eugene Robinson did it with the Packers in 97 and 98, he was traded to the Falcons after that, who themselves made the Superbowl in 1999.  And our own Athletic Director, Mark Murphy and the Washington Redskins made it in 83 and 84.  The team the Colgate player was on won all but 2 of those games, and all three of them have at least one Super Bowl ring.

The best winning perentage by a coach goes to Laurence Bankart, who coached for 5 seasons and ammased a 28-7-3 record.

Despite anything else, Colgate has a winning record against Indiana, Michigan State and Syracuse

Womens Soccer

You really have to just put the whole program in here.  In thier very first season in 1982, the team went 11-4-1.  16 of the first 18 teams had winning records, and the team has been dominant in the Patriot League since it's beginning.  Here are the profiles of some of the people who have made the biggest impact on the team.

Kathy Brawn- Head Coach-  In 9 years as head coach, Colgate has only lost 7 Patriot League games, and has won 63.  The Red Raiders have won the post season tournament 8 of those 9 years.  In addition to being the winningist Colgate womens soccer coach, her overall winning percentage makes her the 11th winningist womens soccer coach in Division 1, and the top female coach.  She has twice been named Patriot League coach of the year, twice has earned the Howard Hartmen award as Colgate's best coach, and just last year was the runner up for a Golden Gate according to this site.

Nicole D'Orazio '97- She scored 45 goals in her career, the tops for any Colgate player.  In addition to that, she added 37 assists, thats 11 more than the next highest player.  Her last three seasons all rank in the top 5 regular season point totals.

Jessica Tuthill '95- Possibly the best player to ever pass through the program.   In 1994 and 1995 she was named an All-American second team player at defense.  She was all Patriot League first team for all 4 seasons at Colgate.   She was a 3 time Colgate MVP as well.  For these reasons, the number 17 is now the only number the team has retired.

Kaitlyn Lynch '94-  Another 4 year All Patriot Leauge first team defensive selection. In 1992, she was the league co MVP, and was Colgate's MVP that same season.  She also won two Red Raider team awards, given to the player who is the best overall soccer player as far as both mind and actual play goes.

Jen Hughes '96-  Colgate's best midfielder in team history.  She was the leagues offensive player of the year in 1996.  Her 40 career goals is second on the teams list, but bear in mind, she was a mid fielder.   She has won the team MVP award, the Red Raider award, and is a two time tourament MVP.  1996 was her banner year, she set the Colgate record for points in a season with 38.   She is currently serving as the teams assistant coach.

Kristine Schuerger '94-  In three seasons at goal, she allowed only .93 goals a game, with 93 being her best season at .77 goals against.  In 22 games she allowed 15 goals and recorded 6 shutouts.

Kelley Tyrrell '99-  Our most recent inductee.  Her goals against average is number 4 on the all time list, but that doesn't take into account the skill some of her saves required.  She was a all league defensive player of the year her senior season and a 3 time Colgate MVP!

And now, for your quick facts...

Lafayette has been the least successful opponent for us.  In 11 attempts, they have yet to beat the Red Raider's.  Colgate also has an 11 game winning streak against Holy Cross.

Since the Patriot League has gotten an auto bid into the NCAA tournament, Colgate has advanced to it for the past 3 seasons.  We have yet to advance to the second round though.

Want a ridiculous score? Colgate 13, Niagara 0, in 1994.

How about a team to feel bad for?  In 1986 Utica was pelted with 66 shots and lost 6-0.

And 1996, what a year for Colgate.   The Red Raiders went 19-2, winning the league, and the ECAC championships.  The only two teams to beat us was UConn and UNH.  That season Colgate beat Syracuse 4-0, our only win against one of our biggest rivals.  11 of those victories were by shutout.
