Womens Basketball
Season Preview

Last year, the Red Raider's overcame expectations by finishing third, after it was predicted that they would finish near the bottom.  The team came within inches of making it to the league finals.  Where did the extra wins come from?  It would be easy to point to last years freshman class, containing Ali Hanson, and all rookie team selection Colleen McCaffrey.  Colleen came of the bench last year to average 6 rebounds and 9 points per game.  Ali Hanson started at guard, getting 4 rebounds per game, 8 points a game, and 60 steals on the season.  Both these players stepped right up and filled crucial roles on the team.   Of the 7 core players last season, all but 2 will be returning at some point this season.  Senior Laura Rohrbacher will be returning to her position at forward following the conclusion of the volleyball season.  Laura was always a key player on the court and contributed to a balanced Red Raider attack.  Directing the attack this year will be Frances Boone.  Boone was named all league second team last season.  She led the league with 96 steals and added 4 rebounds and 13 points per game.  Shes one of the fastest players in the league and will finish out a great career this season as one of the programs top guards.   Intensity was one of the teams trademarks last year, and was led by Sarah Parks in that catergory.  Sarah is  100% dedicated at games and practices.  She was second on the team in scoring, assists and steals, but was even more valuble than that.  She adds a lot of balance to the team, and makes everyone shes playing with even better just by being there.  Colgate is going to have a bit more depth this year.  Danielle Fields and Jamie Glenn will both be sophomores who are ready to see some more playing time.  Last years team really came together in ways coaches could barely allow themselves to hope for.  Person per person, they probally would have been lower in the league, but when they were on the floor together, they were able to play every game competivly, and in one year raised themselves to the top half of the league.  This years freshman hope to capture that same enthusiasm, and lift the team even higher, maybe to the league championship game.   8 freshman have signed on to this years team, bringing a wide range of backgrounds and talents to the program.  Each and every one of them will be competing for playing time when healthy, and many of them will be worked into the lineup during thier first year.   Coach Rohn enters his 6th year at the helm, he's looking for his first season with a winning record this year.  The schedule is basically the same witha  few changes here and there.  Wagner and Dartmouth have been added, along with Gonzaga and Eastern Washington.  The Patriot Leauge is going to be a real batttle this year.  Almost every team is expected to improve, and Holy Cross is continuing to pull even farther ahead of the pack and is eyeing some national top 25 votes.  Preseason polls place Colgate at third in the league, with quite a few votes between the teams above and below them.   This is going to be an exciting year.  We have lost a little bit of height and rebounding with last years seniors, but if this years team comes together, they could once again be challenging for a slot in the league finals.

November 18th - Drexel        1 pm
Game Preview

-Colgate lost a close one on the road last year, but the Lady Dragons lost 3 of thier starters.
Pre Game

-
Results

-Both Ali Hanson and Colleen McCaffrey scored 14 to lead Colgate. The balanced game of Colgate came through, 4 players coming down with 5 rebounds each and each player who got playing time made major contributions to the team effort. Malissa Burke led the freshman class with 12 points and 3 rebounds. Colgate shot over 50% from the field and won in convincing fashion, 66-55.

November 26th - At Iona
Game Preview
-Iona won by ten last year in Hamilton, they only lost 1 starter.
Pre Game
   -
Results
-Colgate took the lead, and held it most of the first half. They stayed in the game up till the final few minutes really, then things fell apart. Malissa Burke led with 15 points and Parks and McCaffrey both broke double figures for points. It's still recorded as a dissapointing 66-56 loss.

November 29th - At Cornell
Game Preview
-This is a game with a lot of meaning, as the series is now tied at 11 wins each following Cornells 68-88 win last year. Cornell lost two of last years starters. They averages 64 points per game last year, while holding opponents to 66. In addition to beating Colgate, they defeated the Patriot Leagues Lehigh last year.
Pre Game
   - Cornell is shooting about 40% this year. They are 2-2, with one of those losses coming to Army. Cornell seems to be a little better than last year, Colgate should be better than last year, let's see if the results show that. This should be a good game
Results
   - Colgate had an off night, only shooting about 30% from the floor. It was a sloppy game, with lots of fouls and mistakes by both sides. The first half was very low scoring, but both teams nearly doubed that mark in the second half. Boone and Parks scored 14 and 12 to lead the Red Raiders, where Rohrbacher and McCaffery both pulled down 9 rebounds. Everyone got a little bit of playng time, but Colgate could not gain any ground on the big Red, losing 65-77.

December 2nd - Long Island     1 pm
Game Preview
   -
Pre Game
   -
Results
-The momentum swung back and forth, with both teams making costly mistakes. The Red Raiders were playing a little bit better in terms of shot percentage and rebounds, but LIU would not give up, and the game went to overtime, then double overtime. Frances Boone turned out to be the hero stealing a pass near the end of the game that could have led to another LIU shot at a win or tie, she then sunk her two foul shots to preserve the win. Colgate played a little sloppy, but games like this really do a good job at building charachter. The Red Raiders win 86-83.

December 5th - At Wagner
Game Preview
   - Wagner is no one to be trifled with. They lost just 1 starter, and had thier leagues best defense last year en route to the North East conferences championship game. This will be the first meeting between the two teams. They didn't play any PL schools last year. They seemed to be pretty inconsistant, beating teams by large margins, then losing to them later on down the road. Perhaps returing a core group will give them some more consistancy.
Pre Game
   - Last week they lost to Drexel in a close game, who we beat. I think they lost a step on defense, but picked up thier offense a little bit. This will be a good test for both teams, who are trying to establish themselves. The team that makes fewer mistakes will win this one, to combat Wagners defense, Colgate will need to work the ball around like they did last year.
Results
-There were only so many times Colgate could close the gap. We stuck with them through the start of the second half, then they went on a 12-0 run that put the game on ice. The end of the game just has not been our friend this year. Wagner shot well, and Colgate just wasn't able to keep pace. The game ended 79-60 in favor of Wagner.

December 9th - At Dartmouth

Game Preview
-Dartmouth made the NCAA tournament last year, as they went 20-8 overall and won the Ivy League, it was an impressive run for them, they lost just 2 starters.
Pre Game
    - Dartmouth comes into this game winless. They have yet to break 60 points on offense. They have played some good teams though.
Results
-The difference was shooting percentage. The difference was about 30%, and that will get you everytime. Some bright spots for the Red Raiers were Frances Boone, with 14 points and 7 steals. Hanson actually had a pretty good night too, and Rohrbacher is coming along and filling her role. Two freshman saw significant playing time. Colgate kept it close, but fell apart in the end again!! Dartmouth made a 8-0 run to seal a 64-55 win for the big Green.

December 17th - At Canisius
Game Preview
-Colgate picked up a 4 point win over the Golden Griffens early last season. They went on to finish next to last in the MAAC
Pre Game
-Canisius enters this game on a three game skid. They have been shooting well though, just getting outscored. If this game turns into a shootout, Colgate will need to relax, pick thier shots, and sink them. This has the potential to be a good confidence builder if we play our cards right.
Results
    - Colgate played a pretty good game, but found themselves playing catch up early on. Canisius was shooting well, and Colgate tried, but could not keep pace. Colgate shot 46%, but the opponents scored on 53% of their shots, including a huge 8 of 16 from the 3 point range. Colgate did not do as well from the three point range or charity stripe. Hanson and Parks both only saw limited action. Parks only playing 15 minutes before racking up 4 fouls. Glenn and McCaffery both had stong nights, Jamie leading the team in rebounds with 8, Colgate was outrebounded though. Freshman Mallisa Burke and Victoria Briscoe stepped up off the bench to have good games. They combined for 30 points. The offense still wasn't enough, Canisius rises to 2-5, while Colgate falls to 2-5 with a 97-84 loss.

December 21st - Quinnipiac       5 pm
Game Preview
   - Well, they smacked us around pretty good last year on the road. And they lost just 1 starter. Looking at their record against common opponents last year shows they have a distinct advantage again this season. It's a home game though, and Colgate had a pretty big home court advantage last year, lets see if that makes it an interesting game.
Pre Game
   -
Results
-Looking at the stats, its a wonder this was a close game. The Braves out rebounded Colgate 42-27, had a 54% to 37% shot percentage advantage, and made 13 less fouls. Colgate played tough tough, Laura Rohrbacher led the team with 6 rebounds, she foulded out though. Frances Boone had a great night, scoring 15 and adding 5 steals to the mix. McCaffery was the star for Colgate though, 14 points, 6 for 11 from the field, 2 for 2 from the charity stripe. Colgate was playing catch up all game long, they finally did at the end, to send the game into overtime, where Colgate took a quick lead, then Quinnipiac pulled away for the 71-65 win.

December 31st - At Eastern Washington
Game Preview

   - This will be the first meeting of these two teams. The Eagles play in the Big Sky Conference, where they went 7-9 in last year and 11-16 overall. They didn't play any east cost teams last year for comparison. 3 of thier starters from last year graduated.

Pre Game

   - They are 4-7 overall, after just breaking a 4 game losing streak with a win against Alaska Fairbanks. They have been averaging 63 points a game, while allowing 68. They are also being out rebounded and shot by a small margin. Despite all this, I have learned my lesson about trying to predict non conference games against schools I don't know. EW competes in the Big Sky Conference.
Results
-The early game was close, for a minute or two. Ali Hanson didn't make a2 pointer all game, she had 3 3 pointers though. Frances Boone, 4 points, 1 rebound. Sarah Parks, 2 points, 1 rebound. Colgate was outrebounded by 15, and we shot 31%. But hey, Colleen McCaffery was 6 for 6 from the foulline, shot well, led teh team in points and rebounds, but it wasn't enough, as Colgate lost 81-58.

January 2nd - At Gonzaga
Game Preview
-The west coast swing continues. Gonzaga went 2-12 last year in the West Coast Confrence, and they lost 4 starters. They did beat American last year, and Eastern Washington twice.
Pre Game
-Gonzaga lost two in a row, both by fairly large margins, while Colgate's losing streak currently stands at 5. Gonzaga lost a close one to Eastern Washington earlier this season. Like Colgate, shooting has not been thier strong point. Their have had some success on the boards, but they just have not been scoring much. Let's hope Colgate goes home happy!
Results
-The game was close in the beginning, but it seems like Gonzaga was almost just toying with us and playing thier game. They only suited up 7 players to face us. Colgate was shooting from the outside a lot, and we actually scored more points from behind the arc, then we did from inside the arc, and thats counting free throws too. In fact, we didn't make any free throws. Besides poor shooting, we also outfoulded them, and were outrebounded by a bit. But we did fight on, and held an 8 point lead early in the second half. Gonzaga went on a 14-0 run. Colgate continued to fight, then Gonzaga went on a 12-0 run. That pretty much did it. Bright spots were McCaffery, who led the team in points, and shot well all game, Hanson and Boone both scored 11, which Rohrbacher snagged 8 rebounds. The team returns east, after this 67-56 loss.

January 5th - Niagara          7 pm
Game Preview
    - Niagara beat Colgate easily last year, and they also are returing all of thier starters. They were just able to stiffle us with thier defense. They really made thier most of thier offensive chances, and didn't look back once. They took third in the MAAC last year, and actually have been predicted to move down a bit.
Pre Game
    - Niagara has had mixed results this year. They lost to thier only Patriot League opponent, Bucknell, by 23 points at the Cornell tournament. Theya re shooting about 39% on the season. And they are getting beat to about 10 rebounds per game. They are still scoring pretty high though. We have a chance in this one if we work. We're back home, so we should have good results.
Results
    - Niagara controlled most of the early game, but Colgate stayed close, even tying it up early in the second half. Then we flopped out again. Colleen McCaffery continues to shine, at 18 points and 9 rebounds. With the absence of some of our traditional scorers. Laura Rohrbacher stepped up for 8 points and 8 rebounds. And Malissa Burke took down 4 rebounds and added 11 points to the effort. Rebounds and fouls were about even, but we shot 30% from the field, yes, 30%, and 54% from the free throw line. Niagara 62-48.

January 9th - At Holy Cross
Game Preview
    - Holy Cross ran through the league last year, and were a 15 seed in the NCAA tournament. They only had one all league player though for the first team, who is graduating, they will have Veronica Jutras returning, who was second team as well as Katie O’Keefe, a all rookie selection. Holy Cross dominated the league preseason poll, getting 15 of 21 first place votes.Holy Cross has been using athletic scholarships for 3 years now. They have lost to Colgate just once in 22 games, including 2 games last year where the Crusaders won fairly easily. It doesn't get much tougher than this.
Pre Game
    - Holy Cross has an ambitious schedule, and thier 7-7 record shows it, they lost by 60 to #1 in the nation, UConn earlier this year, and has faced more than one top tier team this season. So, thier numbers might not be great, but this is against good teams. Holy Cross has won 46 league home games in a row.
Results
    - The two teams stuck close together at first, but Holy Cross got one run in the first half, which was enough to give them the lead for the rest of the game. You can tell the team is in a slump, because players are afraid to shoot now. A few times, we tried to hammer the ball into McCaffery, who is the only player shooting well right now, but had the ball intercepted. The teams shooting percentage did increas slightly, at least from 2 point range, we shot 1-11 from 3 point land, and almost 60% from the foul line. Things just weren't going right, we had a good game plan, but weren't executing, the refs weren't helping either. I can't say for sure they were biased, but they definitly couldn't follow the pace of the game. Malissa Burke got injured when a Holy Cross player went for the ball, but opened up a nasty cut under her eye instead. She was able to return to action after recieving medical attention. It won't look good, but I think she'll be ok. Laura Rohrbacher got hit in the eye as well, she was a little shaken up and lost a contact lens, but other than that, she was fine, it was just a little scary. Allready on the DL is Jamie Glenn, who needed surgury on both knees. She should only be out for another 2 weeks or so. Frances Boone also saw extremly limited playing time, and looked like she was nursing an injury as well. While Sarah Parks and Ali Hanson have still failed to produce, scoring 3 points and 2 rebounds between the pair of them, Rohrbacher picked up some slack with 10 rebounds, and Danielle Fields had a great game, scoring 12. Nothing could stop the Crusaders though, who shot about 50% from the floor, and extended thier home league winning streak to 47 following this 68-54 defeat for Colgate.

January 13th - At Army
Game Preview

    - These teams had some battles last year. With Colgate and Army slugging it out on three occassions. The first time, we let a lead slip away from us and lost in overtime on the road. Then at home, we got off to a slow start, but made a nice run at the end to win by a large margin. And in the first round of the playoffs, we got off to a huge start, only to nearly lose it, then ride it out for a win. Army finished next to last in the league, but return all league first team selection Therese Kelley. The preseason league poll put them in next to last, but by a narrow margin. They might be able to upset some teams and move to the top half of the league. If Colgate beats them twice, they will tie up the series.
Pre Game
    - Army is 12-2 right now, Colgate is 2-10. Kelley and McCaffery have both won two player of the week awards, and one Army player has taken rookie of the week honors. Army is undefeated at home, last game they shot 50% to beat Columbia. They are on a roll, let's see if Colgate can break out of this slump in a hurry!
Results

- All I can say is, if you looked at the Colgate squad that showed up today, you never would have known they were on a losing steak. They came to play, but they were not desperate, or down on themselves. They looked like you would only hope a team on a 8 game winning streak would look. And it showed early on. Colgate jumped out to a quick ten point lead, dominating Army on both ends of the floor for the first ten minutes. Colgate came out very impressive on defense. Earning 13 steals. But our weakness was our shooting. We went 34% on the night. But early on, we were getting the clear majority of the rebounds, so we could take 2 or 3 shots. That would not last, Army started to put together some good offense, and Colgate was also in foul trouble. The difference in fouling could have easily been the difference in this game. "Spot" appeared to have a cold, and only scored 4 points, which is ironic the day after she gets the nickname, but she still led the team in rebounds and steals. She could only play 30 minutes though. Faith had a great game, as did Fances Boone, who showed almost no signs of injury. And this was the best I've seen Parks play all year. Fields had some problems, making none of her 7 shots, and Ali Hanson had some trouble controling her passes, but they were both valuble in other aspects of the game. But at the very end, the lead slipped away, and we were handed a 59-55 loss, our second in the league.

January 16th - At Columbia
Game Preview

- Columbia lost to Colgate 71-62 last year. They have graduated two starters. The Lions went 7-19 last year.
Pre Game
    - Like Colgate, Columbia has just two wins this year. They have lost to Navy, and Army. Most recently they beat Princeton. They are 1-1 in thier league
Results
-Solid defense would help the team through the first half. We stole the ball 15 times during the game, led by Malissa Burke with 3. And Columbia would turn the ball over 31 times during the game. This defense made up for a lower free throw percentage, and we got KILLED on rebounds, 35-56. Not making the most of our free throws really hurt us too, at least in the first half, when we shot 46% of them, and closed out the first half with a slim lead. But Columbia was never able to overtake that lead, and Colgate built on it all during the second half. A final last second surge gave Colgate it's first win in ten tries. A solid game by everyone gives Colgate a 68-57 win.

January 18th - Albany      7 pm

Game Preview
-Albany was 12-15 last year, including a 3 point loss to the Red Raiders. They lost to Holy Cross and Lehigh, while beating Bucknell, Navy, Lafayette, and Army. They lost two key starters, but should have a pretty good season.
Pre Game
    - The Danes are just 4-14 heading into tonights game, have suffered some simmilar results, including a sizable loss to Wagner and Cornell. They are going to need to resurrect thier offense, or the Colgate defense should hold them to a very low score with the way we have been playing.
Results
    - Colgate had a tough first half, trailing by as much as 17, as the Danes shot above 50% all during the first half. Colgate had a great run starting at the beginning of the second half to pull within 2. Then Albany went on a 16-5 run to put it away. Notables from the box score and the game itself. First off, Sarah Parks is back! 15 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists! This is the Parks we need! Spot was her awesome self, 18 points, 11 rebounds. Ali Hanson had a team high 6 assists, but other mistakes that cost the team. Frances Boone only played 12 minutes. The Red Raider's go down in defeat once again, 83-70

January 20th - Lehigh    1 pm
Game Preview
    - These two teams won thier home games last year, and tied in the regular season standings. They have not lost any starters, but did graduate an all league second team player. They were still predicted to finish 4th place in the league this year, right behind Colgate.
Pre Game
    - They have beaten Army and Lafayette, as well as Albany. But they only had a 2 point loss to Holy Cross. They are shooting 46% in league games. On average, they are scoring 70 points per game, while giving up 57. This will be a tough game for us. Lehighs offense has been very good. We need to press them enough to get them to make mistakes before they shoot. This games on our court, so if we are going to beat them, this is the place to do it. If we get a solid game going, this should come down to the wire!
Results
-Malissa Burke had 24 points, McCaffery had 14 rebounds, still not enough to beat Lehigh, and we lose 80-71. (Can you tell I'm updating games almost a month after they occured?)

January 24th - Bucknell    5:30 pm
Game Preview
     -
Pre Game
     -
Results
     - We shot 50%, Frances Boone alone made 5 of 7 three pointers. The team shot 50% on the night, but we lost it at the foul line and under the boards, getting smoked on rebounds. Another game, another dissapointing loss, 93-83 the final.

January 27th - At Navy

Pre Game
     -
Results
     - After holding and losing the lead several times, the Red Raider's finished a solid game to pick up thier first league win. 6 players scored 9 or more. Navy killed itself with turnovers and fouls. Colgate exploited 3 point land and the foul line to take a 88-82 win.

January 29th - Binghamton     7 pm
Game Preview
     -
Pre Game
     -
Results
     - Binghamton shot 63%, we shot 34%. I don't really need to say much more. They had 9 three pointers for crying out loud. Our bench looked pretty good, but there was no way to stop the Bearcats, we lose 105-64

January 31st - Lafayette    5:30 pm
Game Preview
     -
Pre Game

Results
     - Even bad teams can have an off night, and that we did. We really didn't look like we were even trying half the time. Lafayette scored the first 11. They had at least a 23 point lead the entire second half. We had a large number of turnovers, and got beat pretty bad on the boards, I think that pretty much covers it. Lafayette wins thier second league game, to put Colgate in the celler. 76-49 your final.

February 3rd - Holy Cross    1 pm
Pre Game
    -
Results
    - Man, we came out playing hard! Colgate's defense created lots of opportunities, and it looked like we caught em napping. Unfortunatly, we're still not shooting good, and we got out rebounded. Combine that with the fact that Holy Cross got 4 times as many foul shots as we did, and we blew our shot at an upset. We out worked them though, just not technically very good at this point. Holy Cross pulled away at the end, 62-52.
